I had always imagined how I would share the news of my pregnancy with my husband, but the reality surpassed my wildest dreams. It was a moment brimming with unexpected emotions and profound joy.
Just six months after marrying a man nearly 40 years my senior, I discovered I was expecting twins. What stands out most vividly isn’t the birthday gift I prepared for him, but his reaction to the news. His calm demeanor initially left me feeling something was amiss, yet it was a calmness rooted in understanding and love.
After our wedding, I kept my twin pregnancy a secret from my husband – Illustrative image.
At 25, I married a 63-year-old man. Having experienced a failed marriage, I no longer harbored romantic illusions about love. Instead, I sought a partner who was mature, understanding, and capable of building a stable life with me. He, too, had endured life’s challenges and lived alone for years. While we weren’t young enough for passionate love, we were wise enough to cherish and appreciate each other deeply.
When my family learned of our relationship, they vehemently opposed it. Friends were equally unsupportive. Everyone warned that the age gap was too vast, making compatibility difficult, not to mention the concerns about starting a family.
Some even questioned whether I feared the future burden of caring for both young children and an aging husband. I simply smiled. With him, I never felt at a disadvantage. He was consistently considerate, attentive to my meals, and mindful of my rest.
Every evening after work, he’d inquire if I was tired or if there was anything I needed, then quietly prepare my favorite dishes.
He adored children but never pressured me about having kids. He often said, “If fate allows, we’ll have a child. If not, we’ll live peacefully together.” Perhaps his gentle approach eased my worries.
About six months after our wedding, my body began to change. I felt sleepier, ate irregularly, and one night, craved sour fruits, only to reject them the next. Since my periods were irregular, I never suspected pregnancy. When my belly started to show, I joked that his care had made me gain weight.
One day, my close friend stared at my belly and asked, “Are you pregnant?”.
I laughed: “No, I’m just gaining weight.”
But she insisted on taking me to the hospital. When the doctor congratulated me on being over 12 weeks pregnant, I was still in shock. Before I could process it, the doctor added: “It’s not just one, it’s twins.”
I was stunned. Two babies… My ears rang for a moment. Then tears fell without warning. I had never imagined happiness would come so quickly, and in double measure. It was also my husband’s birthday. I decided to keep it a secret.
On my way home, I bought a small gift box, carefully placed the pregnancy test inside, and wrapped it beautifully. I imagined all the possible reactions. Surely he’d be stunned, then hug me tightly, or cry with joy.

My husband’s reaction was far from what I expected – Illustrative image.
That evening, after blowing out the birthday candles, I handed him the gift. He smiled, opened it slowly, and saw the pregnancy test. He stood still for a few seconds.
My heart raced. But to my surprise, he didn’t seem shocked. He just smiled, held the test, and hugged me. “I knew it, I’m like a fortune teller.”
I was baffled. “You… knew what?” He smiled and pulled out a large gift bag from behind the chair. “Your turn for a gift.”
I opened it and was stunned. Inside was the designer handbag I’d admired in a mall window, along with a set of expensive jewelry I’d never dreamed of owning.
Before I could ask, he said, “I bought these a few days ago.”
“But… how did you know I was pregnant?” He looked at me lovingly. “Every night when I held you, I noticed your belly was different. At first, I thought you’d gained weight, but it didn’t seem right.”
Then he explained how I’d been crying over small things, my cravings kept changing, and I’d fallen asleep mid-movie. “I suspected, but didn’t say anything. I was afraid I’d be wrong and embarrass you.” I felt both amused and touched.
He admitted he’d planned to take a day off to take me for a checkup. “If it was true, I’d give you this gift. I didn’t expect you to tell me first.”
I looked at my husband and felt something was… off. People say older men are slow and less observant. Yet he noticed my pregnancy before I did.
I smiled and handed him the ultrasound. “We’re not just having one baby.”
He looked at me. “We’re having… two?”
He stood still for nearly a minute. I thought he was too shocked to react. But when he stepped closer, I saw his eyes welling up. He hugged me tightly, his voice trembling:
“Thank you… At my age, I never thought I’d have the chance to be a father again. And now, heaven has blessed me with two angels at once.”
I hugged him back, tears streaming down. Many think our marriage won’t last due to the age gap. But I’ve realized happiness isn’t determined by age difference, but by genuine love and care.
To me, this 63-year-old man is more than a husband. He’s the first to notice the two little lives inside me. He’s more eager for the news than I am. And I believe, when our twins arrive, he’ll be the happiest father in the world.
