Ignoring Standby Power

Many assume turning off devices with a remote or power button completely stops electricity usage. This misconception can be costly. Devices like TVs, audio systems, microwaves, computers, and phone chargers, when plugged in but inactive, enter standby mode.

In this state, a small current powers indicator lights or awaits remote signals. Though minimal (1W–5W), standby power adds up across multiple devices, contributing 5%–10% to monthly bills when left unchecked.

Make it a habit to unplug rarely used devices or invest in smart power strips with individual switches.

Missetting Air Conditioner Temperatures

On sweltering days, setting ACs to 16°C–18°C for quick cooling is tempting. However, ACs don’t blow air at these temperatures. Such settings force compressors to run continuously, striving for an unattainable goal due to outdoor heat exchange.

Overloading Refrigerators

Refrigerators operate continuously, maintaining cool temperatures through internal airflow. Overloading blocks vents, hindering circulation. Sensors detect inadequate cooling, prompting the compressor to work harder.

Additionally, leaving the door open releases cold air and introduces warm, humid external air, forcing the system to restart. Store food at 70%–80% capacity, organize items neatly, and minimize door opening time.

Running Water Heaters Continuously

Water heaters, similar to large electric kettles, are often left on 24/7 for constant hot water. Insulation cannot retain heat indefinitely; when temperatures drop, heating elements activate, cycling continuously and wasting energy.

Turn on heaters 15–20 minutes before use. During showers, switch off the heater’s circuit breaker to save energy and enhance safety.

Inefficient Washing Machine Use

Each wash cycle consumes similar electricity and water, regardless of load size. Frequent small loads increase usage, inflating bills. Using hot water (60°C–90°C) for regular laundry is unnecessary, as heating accounts for 80% of cycle energy.

Wash clothes at 70%–80% machine capacity. Reserve hot water for stubborn stains or delicate items; cold washes with quality detergent suffice for everyday laundry.

Neglecting Maintenance

Dirty appliances operate inefficiently. Dust-clogged fans, blocked AC filters, or limescale-coated washing machine drums force motors to work harder, generating excess heat and consuming more power.

Clean AC filters monthly, lubricate fan bearings, and service appliances regularly. Proper maintenance optimizes efficiency and extends appliance lifespans.
