Refrigerator is a common household appliance and it is plugged in all year round. Therefore, the electricity bill for the refrigerator is not small compared to other devices in the house. But if you know how to apply the following tips, you can save a considerable amount of electricity for the refrigerator:
Adjust the temperature control knob
The refrigerator has a small temperature control knob. Although used frequently, many people do not know that there is a small knob in the refrigerator that you should adjust the temperature level when reducing food in the refrigerator or when the weather cools down, such as in winter for example. Pay attention to adjust the temperature control knob and ventilation mode. Adjusting the temperature setting according to the usage needs and weather conditions is the most effective way to save energy.
The refrigerator has different temperature levels for each compartment. The suitable temperature for the cooling compartment is from 0-5 degrees Celsius, and for the freezer compartment is -18 degrees Celsius (equivalent to level 3 and 4 in 5 levels). In summer and when you need to preserve a lot of food, you can adjust the temperature to near maximum or maximum level. However, in winter, when the ambient temperature drops, you can adjust the temperature to level 2-3, even level 1.
At level 1, the average temperature of the cooling compartment of the refrigerator still fluctuates around 2-5 degrees Celsius, enough to store food while saving energy. You can do the same for the freezer compartment.
Avoid placing the refrigerator against the wall
Placing the refrigerator against the wall is not only unsafe as it causes the refrigerator to heat up quickly and break down, but also consumes electricity. When the refrigerator is pressed against the wall, it cannot dissipate heat and cool down properly. This leads to increased energy consumption and the device deteriorates quickly. Therefore, place the refrigerator about 10cm away from the wall, it will make the refrigerator more durable, cool down better, and reduce electricity consumption. You should also carefully check and ensure that your refrigerator is properly leveled. When the refrigerator is not level, the door can easily open, affecting the cooling process and increasing electricity consumption.
Limit opening/closing
Opening and closing the refrigerator continuously reduces the cooling temperature inside the refrigerator, causing the air conditioner to work more to compensate, resulting in more energy consumption. Therefore, you should quickly open and close the refrigerator door every time you take out or store food.
In addition, many people have the habit of adjusting the temperature too frequently, which leads to significant power wastage. To save electricity, keep the temperature stable as long as possible.
Regularly check the door seal
If the refrigerator consumes more electricity than usual, it may be due to the worn-out door seal, causing cold air to escape. As a result, the compressor has to work more, reducing the lifespan and increasing the amount of electricity consumed.
To prevent loss of cold air and minimize electricity costs, regularly check the rubber seal behind the refrigerator door to prevent heat loss and energy wastage. Clean the refrigerator regularly, remove dust from the condenser or the external surface of the refrigerator. Do not let frost build up on the evaporator in the freezer compartment thicker than 5mm.
Avoid frequent on/off
To save electricity, you should limit unplugging the refrigerator from the power source and turning it on/off frequently because each time it starts up, it consumes a large amount of electricity. In case you do not use the refrigerator for a long time, disconnect the power supply but clean the refrigerator, remove all items and food from the refrigerator, clean it and let it dry before closing the door, use a cover to protect it from dust.
Do not overstock food
Storing too much food in the refrigerator makes it difficult for the cold air to circulate, causing the refrigerator to work more and consume more electricity, and the device may deteriorate quickly. You should plan to buy and store about 70% of the refrigerator’s capacity.
Avoid placing the refrigerator near other heat-generating devices
Avoid placing the refrigerator near sources of heat to reduce energy consumption and increase the durability of the refrigerator. Avoid placing the refrigerator near the cooking stove, oven, etc.
