4 Procedure for Receiving Organs from Donors

Procedure for Receiving Organs from Donors

If the donor is critically ill, injured, or diagnosed with a poor prognosis, their family should contact the coordination unit at 0913 677 016.

Upon receiving the information, the coordination unit will assess and provide support for the donor’s treatment if their condition is treatable.

If the donor’s condition is untreatable, there will still be enough time to evaluate the cause of death and determine if there are any contraindications for organ donation. It will also be possible to assess whether the donor’s organs are suitable for transplantation.

The timeframe for organ retrieval is 12-48 hours if the above conditions are met. Typically, more organs can be transplanted from brain-dead donors than from heart-dead donors.

We hope that this guide has provided you with the necessary information and clarity on the organ donation registration process!

Frequently asked questions

Organ donation is the process of surgically removing an organ or tissue from one person and transplanting it into another. This can save or greatly enhance the life of the recipient. With a severe shortage of organ donors, many people die or suffer while waiting for a transplant.

Anyone can sign up to be an organ donor, regardless of medical history or age. However, those under 18 will need parental consent. Certain medical conditions may disqualify some people, but many organs and tissues can still be donated even with pre-existing health issues.
