On June 1st, 1942, German fascists surrounded a village in Czechoslovakia, massacring 66 people and sending 104 children to concentration camps. Eighty-eight children perished in gas chambers, and nine others were used as servants for the fascists. Two years later, they surrounded a town in France, herding 400 people into a church, including many women and over 100 children, and burned them to death. To commemorate these tragic events, the International Democratic Women’s Federation decided to designate June 1st of every year as International Children’s Day or simply Children’s Day.

Later, President Lyndon Johnson proclaimed the third Sunday of June as Father’s Day across the United States. It became a permanent national holiday when President Richard Nixon signed it into law in 1972.
