1. Store Spring Onions in a Glass of Water and a Ziploc Bag in the Fridge

– First, give the spring onions a good wash.

– Fill a glass with water, about 4cm high.

– Then, place the spring onions in the glass, with the roots submerged.

– Cover the glass of onions with a large ziploc bag.

– Afterward, transfer the glass to your fridge.

By doing this, the spring onions will stay fresh for 2 to 4 weeks, depending on their initial condition.

2. Preserve Spring Onions with Paper Towels and a Ziploc Bag

– After washing the spring onions, let them air-dry as much as possible.

– Cut the onions, separating the green and white parts.

– Take two sheets of paper towel and wrap a handful of the green parts in them. Place them in a large ziploc bag. Squeeze out the air and seal the bag.

– Get a single sheet of paper towel and wrap some of the white parts in it. Put them in another ziploc bag. Again, squeeze out the air and seal.

– Label the bags with the date. That way, you’ll know what they are and when to use them.

– Repeat this process for the remaining onions. This method will keep them fresh for 2 to 4 weeks, depending on their initial condition.

3. Chop and Freeze the Spring Onions

– Start by washing and drying the spring onions. Then, separate the green and white parts.

– Chop the white parts finely. Place them in a small ziploc bag.

– Chop the green parts. Put them in another ziploc bag.

– Label the bags with the date and place them in the freezer. This method will keep the spring onions fresh for at least 3 months.

– When using, there’s no need to defrost. Just take what you need and add it directly to soups or stir-fries. If you defrost and refreeze, the quality will deteriorate, and the onions will turn mushy.

Note: This method is not suitable for garnishing; it’s only for cooked dishes, juices, and purees.

4. Regrow Spring Onions in a Pot

– Start by planting the onions in a pot or box with good drainage. Add soil and bury the roots of the spring onions. Water daily and place in a sunny spot.

– Once the onions start sprouting, you can cut the tops for use. The green parts will regrow.

– This method will provide you with a constant supply for a long time, at least a few months, or even a year if you take good care of them.

Note: You can also do this in water, i.e., plant the onions in a glass of water. But in hot weather, the bottom may rot within two weeks. It also depends on the type of onion, as some varieties never rot.
