What is the ‘Death Position’ in the Bedroom According to Feng Shui?

According to feng shui expert Melissa Waite Stamps, as shared on Homesandgardens.com: “A bed should never be placed directly opposite a door, with the foot of the bed facing the door. This is a posture used by many Asian countries to send off the deceased.”

Some experts also believe that any position where your head points directly at the door can create a ‘death’ posture in feng shui.

Johanna Augusta, another specialist, further explains this posture: “‘Death’ or ‘coffin’ posture in feng shui is when you sleep with your head pointing north. It is believed that this posture can block the flow of life energy and is therefore not encouraged.”

Melissa advises: “It’s essential to consider the bedroom layout so that the bed is in a commanding position. To determine this, you can refer to the Bagua map. The best bed positions are usually in areas such as Wealth, Fame, or Relationships (Love), depending on the bedroom door’s location.”

So, Where Should the Bed Be Placed?

There are multiple solutions to avoid the ‘death position’ in feng shui, but placing the bed in a commanding position is the best choice. Melissa explains: “The bed should be positioned behind the center line of the door, in the farthest and diagonal position from the entrance. Typically, this will be the farthest left or right corner of the room.”

She also emphasizes: “Avoid placing the bed under a window as this can affect the energy flow (Chi) and make it vulnerable to bad luck.”

What If You Can’t Avoid the Death Position?

If it’s not possible to change the bed’s position according to feng shui, there are still measures you can take to mitigate the negative impact. Melissa suggests: “If the bedroom door opens directly onto the bed, this can cause health and energy problems for the corresponding side of the body. If there’s no other option, hang a wind chime or a round-cut crystal from the ceiling between the bed and the door to lessen the impact.”

Johanna Augusta adds: “Hanging a crystal or using a mirror in the north corner of the room will reflect negative energy and improve your sleep.”

From a design perspective, using a bed with a headboard or placing a chest or bench at the foot of the bed can create a sense of security and act as a ‘shield’ between the bed and the door. It also adds aesthetic appeal and functionality to your bedroom space.

Melissa concludes: “Understanding the Bagua helps you grasp the importance of the commanding position and creates a bedroom space conducive to love, dreams, and restful sleep.”

Which Direction Should the Bed Face in the Bedroom?

The best direction to place your bed is towards the south. This helps you avoid the ‘death position’ and, according to feng shui, it also prevents sleep disorders like insomnia while reducing daily fatigue.

Feng shui research suggests there’s a natural reason for this. Even animals like deer and cattle tend to face this direction when resting or eating.
