Electric kettles are a common household appliance, providing a quick way to boil water. However, a new kettle often has an unpleasant plastic smell. Try these simple yet effective methods to get rid of the plastic smell, foul odors, and stains from your electric kettle.
Boil Water Multiple Times and Discard
This is the simplest and most common method to address the foul smell from your kettle. It’s also cost-free and doesn’t require any additional tools.
Simply fill the kettle with water up to the highest mark. Turn it on to boil the water, then discard it. Repeat this process 2 to 3 times to effectively remove the plastic smell.
If the plastic smell persists after 2 to 3 boils, you can repeat the process once or twice more to completely eliminate the odor. This method also helps remove dust and debris from the first use, ensuring drinking water quality.
Use Fresh Lemon to Deodorize
As you may know, fresh lemon is great for removing stains from stainless steel or aluminum pots, and it’s also effective at eliminating plastic smells from your kettle.
Cut a fresh lemon into thin slices and place them into the kettle. Fill the kettle with water up to the highest mark. Boil the water and then let it soak for about 30 minutes. This will ensure that the plastic smell is completely gone.
Even if your kettle has built-up stains and debris from long-term use, this method can effectively remove them.
Use Vinegar to Deodorize
Vinegar is a common household ingredient that can be used to get rid of the new plastic smell. You can rest assured that this method is safe and effective, as vinegar is mild and harmless.
Pour half a liter of vinegar and water into the kettle, then boil the mixture. Let it soak for about an hour, then discard the solution and rinse the kettle with clean water. This will completely remove the foul smell from your kettle.
Use Citric Acid to Deodorize
Pour 500ml of water into the kettle and bring it to a boil. Then, add 25g of citric acid and let it sit for about 15 minutes. Next, unplug the kettle, let it cool down completely, and then use a damp sponge to clean it.
Clean the Kettle with Baking Soda
Baking soda is a common kitchen ingredient known for its cleaning and deodorizing properties.
Fill your kettle with water and dissolve about 50g of baking soda in it. Boil the solution and let it cool down for an hour. Finally, discard the mixture and thoroughly rinse the kettle with clean water. This will eliminate the foul smell from your kettle.
Deodorize the Kettle with Ginger
You can also use ginger to get rid of the foul smell from your new kettle. Simply cut a few slices of ginger, place them in the kettle, and fill it with water. Boil the water and then discard it. Finally, rinse the kettle, and it’s ready to use.
