Many modern scooter models come with a host of features and utilities designed to enhance rider safety. However, there are often overlooked safety details and features due to a lack of awareness or understanding, such as the safety latch located behind the brake lever of a scooter.

This small, black latch, about the size of a chopstick’s head, is discreetly placed behind the left brake lever. This feature is rarely seen on older models but has become more common in recent scooter designs.
The purpose of this latch is to allow riders to lock their brakes and keep the scooter stationary when parked or when stopping on an inclined surface.
Additionally, the brake lock latch serves as a security measure against theft. By engaging the latch, riders can buy themselves time to notice and prevent any potential theft attempts.
How to Use the Brake Lock Latch
To engage the brake lock latch, first, fully squeeze the left brake lever, then gently flip the latch up, and finally release the brake. This will lock the rear wheel, preventing the scooter from rolling when parked or stopped on an incline. To unlock the brake, simply squeeze and release the brake lever.
It’s important to note that if the rear brake is adjusted too tightly, the brake lock feature may not function properly. Therefore, it’s crucial to set the brake tension according to the manufacturer’s specifications.
