Kalanchoe Blossoms
Kalanchoe, or more affectionately known as the “lan càng cua,” is a succulent that bursts into a vibrant display of colors during fall, winter, and spring. Its bright and cheerful blooms will instantly uplift any living space, infusing it with positive energy.
In the fall, as your kalanchoe starts to bud, you can wait for the first flowers to appear, then pluck a few leaves, cut some stems, and pot them in well-aerated, slightly moist, and fluffy soil. Within about ten days, you’ll notice the cuttings taking root, with a remarkable 99% success rate.
Once your new kalanchoe plant has established itself, give it plenty of sunshine and regularly feed it with a balanced fertilizer containing phosphorus, potassium, and a mix of other nutrients to encourage new growth and vibrant blooms.
Hen-and-Chicks
Hen-and-chicks, or “sống đời,” is not just a succulent that blooms from fall through spring; it’s a long-lasting bloomer, with flowers lasting up to 30 days. This diverse plant comes in a wide range of colors and both single and double varieties. In feng shui, hen-and-chicks is believed to attract wealth and good fortune, making it an ideal houseplant.
You can easily propagate hen-and-chicks from leaves or stems. However, if you want quicker results, opt for stem cuttings. With this method, you may even see flowers appearing as soon as the plant takes root. After potting your cuttings, pay close attention to moisture levels, providing just the right amount of water. Additionally, apply some root-stimulating solution, place the plant in a bright and cool spot, and wait patiently for about 15 to 20 days for the roots to develop.
Phlox
Phlox, or “phong lữ,” thrives in cool, mild conditions and puts on a spectacular display of blooms in spring and fall. To ensure a healthy and blooming phlox plant, provide it with the right temperature conditions. The ideal time to take phlox cuttings is during fall and winter, especially from October to November, before the weather turns too cold. If you already have a healthy phlox plant, simply cut a few small stems after it has flowered.
Choose healthy, flowering stems for a higher success rate. Cut the stems into 6 to 8-inch segments, removing the lower leaves while leaving the top two. Within about 20 days, your phlox cuttings will take root and start developing new leaves and branches.
Gloxinia
“Bát tiên,” or Gloxinia, is a flowering plant that blooms year-round and is relatively low-maintenance and easy to grow, making it suitable for both indoor and outdoor cultivation. If you already have a healthy gloxinia plant, you can easily propagate it by cutting a large stem, wiping away the sap, and then sticking the cutting into moist soil. Within about 20 days, your cutting will take root and start blooming.
Gloxinia is not only easy to propagate but also simple to care for. Just place the potted plant in a bright spot, water it when the soil is about 50% dry, and feed it with a balanced fertilizer once a month, and you’ll be rewarded with a thriving, blooming plant.
