To prepare Bougainvillea for the Lunar New Year, gardeners usually apply specific techniques around October or November. The vibrant and abundant blooms of this plant during the festive season not only bring new energy to the new year but also signify a year of prosperity and good fortune. In recent years, Bougainvillea has become a popular choice for both rich and poor homeowners as it produces an abundance of flowers, is relatively low-maintenance, and does not require much effort to care for.
To ensure your Bougainvillea blooms profusely for the Lunar New Year of 2025, keep in mind the following tip:
Preparing Bougainvillea for the Lunar New Year
If left to bloom freely, Bougainvillea may or may not flower during the Lunar New Year. To ensure blooming during the festive season, gardeners need to put the plant into a “waiting mode.” In the colder northern regions, this process typically starts around mid-October for new hybrid varieties, while older varieties are usually pruned and water-restricted at the beginning of November. It’s important to keep an eye on the weather forecast, and if a particularly cold winter is expected, it’s best to start the process earlier. In warmer areas, such as the southern regions, where the climate is more favorable, the process is delayed until mid-November. Bougainvillea flowers can last for a long time, even up to a month, so don’t worry if you start a little earlier—your flowers will still be fresh for the new year.
Pruning Techniques
Gardeners often prune Bougainvillea aggressively, as the plant requires significant pruning to produce an abundance of flowers. If the plant is currently flowering, remove all flowers and buds. It is also recommended to remove some leaves to limit the plant’s nutrition for leaf development.
During water restriction, the plant may shed some leaves. If the plant does not shed leaves on its own, you should remove them manually in November. This pruning technique aims to concentrate the plant’s nutrients on flower production. This process should be continued consistently until the flowers bloom during the Lunar New Year. Additionally, pruning encourages the growth of new branches, which tend to produce more flowers than older ones.
For Bougainvillea planted in the ground, it can be more challenging to control water intake as they naturally absorb water and nutrients from the soil, following their biological cycle. Therefore, these techniques are more effective for potted Bougainvillea. However, even for ground-planted Bougainvillea, you can apply similar techniques to increase the chances of more flowers during the Lunar New Year, although the results may not be as significant as with potted plants.
Water Restriction Techniques to Stimulate Flowering
“Water restriction” refers to the technique of reducing or completely stopping water supply to the plant to stimulate flowering. Bougainvillea thrives in dry and sunny conditions, and when it comes to flowering, the drier and sunnier the better. If the plant receives ample water and nutrients, it will focus its energy on leaf development rather than flower production.
Water restriction for Bougainvillea should begin around November 10th on the lunar calendar. In colder northern regions, it is advisable to start 15 days earlier. To implement water restriction, stop watering the plant and protect it from rainwater. Typically, water restriction is done in cycles of 15-20 days, with 5-day intervals: for 5 days, do not provide any water to the plant, ensuring that rainwater does not interfere. On the 6th day, give the plant about 2 liters of water to recover, and then repeat the 5-day water restriction. Bougainvillea is resilient and can withstand drought, so don’t worry about harming the plant with this technique.
Fertilizer Application for Flower Development
Starting from mid-October on the lunar calendar, it is recommended to apply NPK fertilizer to your Bougainvillea weekly. For the first two weeks, use a 1:1:1 ratio to promote the plant’s growth and leaf development. In the following weeks, when flower buds start to appear, switch to a 1:2:1 ratio to encourage flower growth. Finally, in the two weeks leading up to the Lunar New Year (after the full moon of the 12th lunar month), use a 1:1:2 ratio to ensure vibrant and long-lasting flowers.
Ensuring Adequate Sunlight
Bougainvillea requires sunlight to bloom. It thrives in sunny conditions, and adequate sunlight intensifies the color of the flowers. That’s why Bougainvillea grows particularly well in coastal areas and southern regions with abundant sunlight. Ensure your potted Bougainvillea receives sunlight daily, aiming for at least 5-6 hours of sunlight each day.
