Bãi Phủ Fish Market, located on the northern side of the island, is the busiest fishing port during the south wind season. As the day begins, the market comes alive with the hustle and bustle of seafood trading. Even before dawn, boats and canoes are already bustling in and out, transporting the day’s catch.

During the south wind season, all the boats and ships converge on this side of the island, making Bãi Phủ Market even more crowded. Since it is a shallow area, larger ships cannot dock and have to hire canoes to transport goods. Each transportation trip costs between 200,000 and 300,000 VND.

Traders from the three communes of Tam Thanh, Long Hai, and Ngu Phung also flock to the market to purchase seafood. They carefully select the freshest fish to either sell at the markets or supply to restaurants catering to tourists on the island. Every morning, local residents come to collect the fish and quickly take them to the market to sell. By 7 a.m., they have usually finished stocking up for the market opening.

The waters around Phu Quy Island are abundant with a variety of fish, including grouper, tuna, snapper, grouper, cowfish, and parrotfish.

Typically, the wife or daughter of the boat owner will handle the trading with the wholesale buyers. While there is some haggling and competition, it is done without the loud and crude atmosphere found in some other fish markets.

The waters around Phu Quy Island are rich and abundant, providing a plentiful supply of seafood. The catch is brought to the market on the same day, ensuring its freshness. At around 3 p.m., the fishermen head back out to sea, fishing through the night until the next morning. Between 5 and 6 a.m., they bring their catch of fish and squid to Bãi Phủ Market, before returning home to eat, rest, and prepare for their afternoon journey back to the sea.

The constant flow of boats transporting seafood to and from Bãi Phủ Market continues at a lively pace until around 8 a.m., when the early morning fish market comes to a close.

Tips for Visiting Bãi Phủ Market

To truly experience the vibrant atmosphere of Bãi Phủ Market, it is best to arrive early, around 5 to 6 a.m., when the seafood is freshly brought to shore. This is also the perfect time to find high-quality fish, squid, and shrimp at great prices. However, as the market primarily caters to traders and locals, it is advisable to observe how they negotiate and barter to avoid feeling overwhelmed. Don’t be shy to ask about prices and haggle a little, but always maintain a friendly and respectful attitude towards the sellers. Even if you don’t plan to buy anything, you can still visit the market to take photos and immerse yourself in the lively fishing community.

Bãi Phủ Market is not just a place for seafood trading; it is a reflection of the bustling laborious life of the Phu Quy Island fishermen.
