1. Choose the most beautiful flowers
A beautiful flower arrangement starts with the right selection of flowers. Begin by choosing a main color for your arrangement. Choose 2-3 flowers of the same color to complement each other. Then choose another flower with a contrasting color to create an attractive contrast.
2. Add accents to your flower vase
Accessory foliage like ferns, lisianthus, baby’s breath, or poms, are a great way to add texture and shape to your flower vase.
3. Prepare your tools
Before you start, make sure to prepare your flower arranging tools, so that everything you need is ready when you start. You will need a vase, a sharp knife or scissors, clear flower tape (or regular tape narrowed down), and some empty vases. If you are arranging roses, you can use tools to remove thorns before arranging.
4. Choose a flower vase
Choosing the right flower vase for your arrangement is just as important as choosing the right type of flowers. Consider the height, weight, and arrangement style you want. If you are a beginner, a tall vase will be more difficult to use as the stems tend to lean outwards.
You can opt for shorter cylinder vases. These neutral styles are perfect for beginners and allow the true beauty of the flowers to shine. These heavy, short vases are also great if you need to change the position of the flowers in the vase.
Before you start, make sure that the vase is clean. Scrub your vase with a sponge with a little baking soda and then rinse it clean. Do not use dish soap to clean your flower vase as it leaves behind residue that will make your flowers wilt faster.
5. Handle your flowers
Fill your bucket with room temperature water. Water that is too hot or too cold will shock the flowers. Add flower food to the water. Trim the stems a bit, then arrange the flowers according to your design before placing them in the bucket. Proper handling will ensure that your flowers are at room temperature, adequately watered, and slightly bloomed.
6. Create a grid
Use a grid with holes, create a mouth on top of the vase and secure the tape roll about half an inch down the side of the vase. They will keep the flowers in place as you arrange them.
7. Cut the stems
Cut each stem at a 45-degree angle just before you arrange it in the vase. This angle provides more surface area for the flowers to absorb water than a straight cut. An angled cut prevents the stems from sucking down to the bottom of the vase. It also prevents air bubbles from forming at the base, which can prevent the flower from taking in the necessary water.
Flowers with woody stems, such as roses, chrysanthemums, or lilacs, often have difficulty absorbing enough water. This is one of the reasons why they wilt quickly. To make these flowers last longer, trim at a 45-degree angle and then make a vertical cut about 7cm up the stem.
During this time, you should also remove any leaf that may be submerged in water. This important step will help prolong the life of your flower arrangement.
8. Arrange flowers from largest to smallest
Now comes the fun part – arranging the flowers in the vase! Start with the larger flowers, which will serve as the focal point of the arrangement and help create the overall shape, then move on to smaller flowers. Once you have arranged them, fill the vase with water, but make sure it does not overflow onto any leaves.
9. Place the flower vase in the right position
Flower vases can be a great addition to any living space. The best place to put a flower vase is in a cool, indirect sunlight area. A carefully maintained flower vase will typically stay fresh for about 5-7 days.
If you are preparing for a special event, such as a wedding or party, start arranging flowers no more than a day or two beforehand. After arranging the flowers, they should be kept in a dark, cool space. Note that you should not store them in a refrigerator that has been used to store food as it can cause the flowers to deteriorate faster.
