The bed is an essential piece of furniture in every household.
Since ancient times, there have been many superstitions in China regarding the placement of the bed. For instance, it is believed that the head of the bed should not face west, and the bed should not be placed against certain walls as it could bring bad luck and be unscientific, leading to undesirable consequences.
1. Avoid placing the bed against the wall with a window
The bed is a place for rest and should be kept clean and airy. However, according to ancient beliefs, placing the bed against a wall with a window can allow dust and pathogens to enter, and opening the window can expose one to more toxins, potentially harming the lungs and overall health.
In ancient times, due to poor living conditions, windows were usually made of wood, and sleeping next to them could let in a significant amount of cold air through the gaps, increasing the risk of illness.
However, in modern homes, windows are well-sealed, and it is less likely for cold or hot air to enter even if the bed is placed against the window. Moreover, most households today have air conditioning and heating systems, further reducing the risk of illness from this factor.
2. Avoid placing the bed against the wall adjacent to the bathroom
The bathroom, which often includes the toilet, is typically considered an unclean space with impure air. In the past, when economic conditions were challenging, and modern odor-eliminating devices were not available, having the bed against the bathroom wall could be uncomfortable and affect sleep quality. Moreover, foul odors and toxic gases from the bathroom could enter the resting space, potentially causing health issues for the bed’s occupant.
Today, most houses are made of reinforced concrete, and the quality of bathrooms has improved significantly, reducing noise and eliminating odors effectively. As such, placing the bed against the bathroom wall may not be as much of a concern as it once was.
Nonetheless, it is better to be safe than sorry, and even today, many people adhere to the belief that the bed should not be placed against these two walls to prevent illnesses.
In reality, with modern, sturdy houses, the impact of bed placement on one’s health is minimal. As long as you maintain a healthy lifestyle, bed placement against any wall is unlikely to significantly affect your well-being.
Other considerations for bed placement
– Place the bed in a spacious area to allow for good airflow and a comfortable sleeping environment.
– Avoid placing the head of the bed against the toilet wall. If your current setup does not allow for this, try rotating the bed so that the headboard faces a different direction, ensuring it does not directly face the toilet door.
– Avoid placing the bed in a position where it faces sharp corners, as this can create negative energy and an oppressive atmosphere, making it difficult to sleep peacefully. If sharp corners are present, consider building them into rounded corners or find a way to cover them up.
– Do not place a mirror opposite the bed. Seeing one’s reflection upon waking up can be disorienting and frightening. Additionally, the mirror’s strong reflection can interfere with the body’s energy while sleeping. If there is a mirror in the bedroom, cover it or turn it toward the wall at night.
– The ideal orientation for the bed is north-south. The Earth’s magnetic field runs from south to north on the surface and north to south within the planet. Sleeping with your head positioned toward the south or north aligns with these magnetic fields and is believed to be beneficial for health.
– Avoid hanging a chandelier directly above the bed. While aesthetically pleasing, it can create a sense of oppression and restlessness. If you wish to have a light fixture above the bed, consider installing wall-mounted lamps or place the bed slightly askew and install lights on either side above the head of the bed.
