Scalp detox has the potential to improve the health of your scalp. It helps to regulate cell turnover, reduce inflammation, and decrease oil production. Detoxification involves cleansing and exfoliating (either via a massage or the use of specialized tools) to remove dead skin cells and any other residue that may be present on the scalp. This is especially beneficial for those with thick, coarse, curly hair or hair that is regularly heat-styled. It can also be beneficial for those with oily scalps.
When to Detox Your Scalp
Signs that you may need to detox your scalp include mild flaking, itchiness, or a build-up of product that is visible to the eye. If your scalp is itchy, it’s important to rule out any underlying causes such as allergies or infections…
How to Detox Your Scalp
Fresh Ginger
Ginger helps with hair growth, follicle development, and can help with dandruff and hair loss. It also has purifying, detoxifying, and healing properties that benefit the scalp.
Simply grate ginger and extract the juice. Then, wet your hair and apply the ginger juice from root to tip. You can also mix ginger with shampoo in a 1:1 ratio and massage it into your scalp to allow the nutrients to penetrate deeper. Finally, rinse with water and pat dry.
Cucumber and Lemon
Cucumber contains minerals that help reduce hair loss. Added vitamins A, B5, and K reduce itching, moisturize, and create a protective barrier for your hair.
Wash and peel the lemon and cucumber. Puree them, extract the juice, and add hair oil (if desired). Then, use this mixture as you would regular shampoo.
Note
After detoxing, continue to cleanse with shampoo. Only use shampoos that are pH neutral and free from harsh ingredients like parabens and silicones. You may then consider following up with one or more conditioning steps to further care for your hair. Conditioner is the most basic option. Experts recommend using the same type of shampoo and conditioner. Also, try to limit the use of harsh chemicals and heat on your hair.
Avoid dying your hair as bleaching and coloring can damage the structure of your hair. In addition, because scalp “detoxing” is quite intense, use in moderation.
2. Cucumber and Lemon Detox: Puree and juice a washed and peeled lemon and cucumber. You can also add hair oil to this mixture. Use this blend as you would regular shampoo. The minerals and vitamins in cucumber help reduce hair loss and itching, while lemon provides a clarifying effect.
