Causes of Butt Acne

Butt acne, back acne, and face acne all have the same underlying cause: trapped oil and dead skin in hair follicles, leading to inflammation and excessive bacterial growth.

People who spend a significant amount of their day at a desk increase the chances of getting butt acne due to sweat and dirt buildup.

We all enjoy the comfort of wearing athletic clothing, but non-breathable materials like spandex can also contribute to butt acne.

How to Treat Butt Acne

Body Care

Look for body washes that contain benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid. Other important ingredients to look for include glycolic acid and retinol, which are increasingly found in body washes.

Consider focusing on nighttime butt acne care, where you can apply spot treatment and let it fully dry while lying face down in bed.

A dermatologist may prescribe stronger ingredients, such as clindamycin cream, if over-the-counter products are not effective for you. It is an antibiotic that helps to combat bacteria. Patience and consistency are key in removing butt acne. It may take up to six weeks or more with over-the-counter products.

Once your butt acne has healed, don’t give up on your treatment regimen. You can reduce the frequency of using acne-fighting products on your body, but be sure to maintain at least one or two times a week to prevent butt acne from recurring.

Ditch Sweaty Workout Clothes

Tight, sweat-soaked clothes are an excellent breeding ground for butt acne. After a workout, if you cannot shower immediately, wipe yourself down with a baby wipe from your gym bag. Change out of your dirty workout clothes as soon as possible and avoid re-wearing them, even if they appear clean with little sweat as they can harbor more bacteria.
