## Sunscreen Application: A Daily Essential
Apply Sunscreen Daily
Incorporating sunscreen into your skincare routine is essential. Even on cloudy days, a significant amount of UV rays penetrate through, so don’t skip this step! The same goes for chilly days. Apply sunscreen after cleansing and moisturizing your face to ensure it doesn’t wash away. If you’re going to be exposed to the sun, reapply every two hours for optimal protection.
Use the Right Amount
The recommended amount is two milligrams of sunscreen per square centimeter of skin. If you don’t have a measuring tool, a handy guideline is to use one-fourth of a teaspoon for your face and neck alone.
Find Your Perfect Sunscreen
Opt for a broad-spectrum sunscreen that shields against both UVA and UVB rays. While no sunscreen can block all UV rays, a product with an SPF of 30 blocks 97% of UVB rays, while SPF 50 blocks 98%.
Don’t Neglect Certain Body Parts
Remember to protect your entire body when stepping out. Take care to apply sunscreen generously and evenly. Even with sunscreen, don’t forget to cover up with clothing. Often-forgotten areas include the lips, hands, feet, eyelids, and ears, which are all vulnerable to sun damage.
Avoid Peak Sun Hours
If possible, try to stay out of direct sunlight when the sun is at its strongest, typically between noon and 3 p.m. If you must be outdoors during these times, use an umbrella or seek shade.
Regular Skin Checks
It’s important to consult a board-certified dermatologist if you notice any itching, bleeding, or unusual changes to your skin.
For individuals at a higher risk of skin cancer or those with a history of it, annual skin checks with a healthcare team, including your primary care physician, oncologist, or dermatologist, are recommended.
If you have sensitive skin, opt for sunscreens formulated specifically for sensitive skin. For oily skin, choose non-comedogenic options that won’t clog pores. Selecting an unsuitable sunscreen may result in inadequate absorption.
