The Useless Beauty Trends That Won’t Smooth Out Wrinkles

Do various methods to reduce wrinkles really work?

Before you buy another gadget or serum promising to reduce wrinkles, tighten skin, or diminish pigmentation, heed the advice of dermatologists. While adopting a great skincare routine is always a wise move, wasting money on products that do nothing or, worse, could irritate your skin is not.

“These treatments have become very popular because they are affordable. Sometimes, the buyers or users of these treatments think they can save money. But the issue is that it will only double or even triple the cost,” says board-certified dermatologist Dr. Anna Chacon. She identifies three popular anti-aging treatments that are overhyped and ineffective for wrinkles.

3 Anti-Aging Methods That May Not Work for Wrinkles:

1. At-Home Microneedling

Dr. Chacon states that microneedling has been proven in studies to aid in the absorption of topical skincare therapies such as vitamin C and retinoids when performed in a professional setting. But the keyword here is “professional.”

This means shelling out more money to have a dermatologist perform the treatment in a clinical setting. At-home devices, including microneedling tools, have gained popularity in recent years as they promise to mimic the results of these procedures without the hefty price tag or downtime. Unfortunately, they cannot replace professional treatments.

Hygiene and safety are concerns when using at-home kits. Moreover, the microneedling device is likely to be very shallow—so shallow that it won’t be effective. If you have sensitive skin and press too hard with the microneedling device, you could also irritate your skin. If you’re curious about this procedure, it’s best to leave it to the experts who can perform it safely and effectively.

2. Essential Oils

Sensitive skin and fragrances don’t always mix—even when the source is a natural oil. Essential oils in skincare have become a popular trend—even standalone oils are sold as serums to provide anti-aging benefits.

It’s essential to read the labels, especially if you have sensitive skin, as it’s not uncommon for brands to include peppermint or lavender essential oils in serums or creams for a refreshing scent. Furthermore, there is no evidence that these ingredients help reduce signs of aging.

Some essential oils are of excellent quality and also smell fantastic. However, when used in sufficient concentrations on the face, they can cause psoriasis, acne rosacea, dermatitis, and skin irritation. Although essential oils can be safely used on the face, they must first be diluted in a carrier oil.

3. Facial Rollers

While users may find them relaxing, especially when chilled, there is little scientific evidence to support the anti-aging promises of these over-hyped skincare tools.

Made from jade? Perhaps rose quartz? Or amethyst? They won’t provide any long-term benefits, but they can temporarily help reduce puffiness or under-eye bags.

If you already have a facial roller tucked away in your fridge and awaiting you each morning, don’t stop incorporating it into your routine—but it would be wise to temper your expectations. There’s no harm in using them if you enjoy it. Just remember not to expect miracles from the marketing.
