There are many cases where you might want to view Facebook Messenger messages that others have sent to you without showing the “seen” status. To view messages without being detected, you can try one of the following methods.

Turn off push notifications on Facebook

When a Facebook message is sent to you, you can easily see the notification on your phone’s lock screen or notification bar. To view the full content of the Facebook message without being detected, you need to turn off push notifications.

You need to open the Facebook app, tap on the Settings icon (gear icon) in the top right corner of the screen. Select the Notifications option.

Then, select Push Notifications and turn off this feature.

Enable floating notifications on your device

Floating notifications allow you to receive new message notifications from Messenger at the top corner of your screen. This way, you can quickly view the message content without having to tap on the chat box.

For iOS, to enable floating notifications, go to Settings => Notifications => enable Allow Notifications => Notification Center.

To enable this feature on Android phones, you can open the Settings => Notifications and Control Center and turn on Floating Notifications => Select Messenger.

Enable notifications on the lock screen

You can read the content of the message directly on your device’s lock screen if you enable the lock screen notification feature.

For Android devices, to enable this feature, go to Settings => Notifications and Control Center and enable Lock Screen Notifications.

For iOS devices, go to Settings => Notifications => enable Allow Notifications on Lock Screen.

Frequently asked questions

You can enable ‘Message Seen’ notifications in your Facebook Messenger settings. This will allow you to read messages without the sender knowing you’ve seen them. Alternatively, you can use the chat heads feature to read and respond to messages without opening the Messenger app.

You can also read messages without triggering the ‘Seen’ indicator by using Facebook’s ‘Secret Conversations’ feature, which uses end-to-end encryption and allows you to set a timer for messages to disappear. Additionally, you can access your messages from a different device or use the Facebook Lite app, which doesn’t have the ‘Seen’ feature.

Unfortunately, you cannot turn off the ‘Seen’ feature completely. However, you can disable read receipts on a per-conversation basis by tapping the person’s name at the top of the conversation and turning off the ‘Send Receipts’ option. This will also disable your ability to see when your messages are delivered and read.

You can also adjust your privacy settings to control who can message you and where your messages are delivered. You can choose to only receive messages from friends or allow everyone to message you. Additionally, you can set up message filtering to prioritize messages from friends and move messages from unknown senders to a separate folder.
