Marie Thérèse, also known as Nguyễn Hữu Thị Lan, was the real name of Queen Nam Phuong. She was born on December 4, 1914, in the Kiến Hoà District, Định Tường Province (now part of Gò Công town, Tiền Giang Province). Her family was a wealthy Catholic family, the richest in the South at that time. Her grandfather was Huyện Sỹ Lê Phát Đạt – one of the four richest people in Vietnam in the early 20th century.
Queen Nam Phuong studied in the West and was not only highly educated but also had exceptional beauty, grace, and a modern sense of fashion. The clothes she chose emphasized elegance, gentleness, and her own unique style. Looking back now, they are still considered very fashionable.
In her twenties, Queen Nam Phuong had a tall, slender, and graceful figure. In old photos, she often wore elegant and gentle outfits.
Through the remaining visual materials, it can be seen that Queen Nam Phuong looked beautiful in both traditional Vietnamese and Western-style clothing. Seeing her in formal attire with dragon robes and phoenix headdresses, or in traditional ao dai with beaded necklaces, earrings, and brooches, she exuded nobility. There are also images of her wearing ao dai and headscarves.
Having studied in France for many years, Queen Nam Phuong adapted her fashion taste to Western styles. A notable example is the red silk suit and pencil skirt in cream color with a lipstick pattern. This is evidence of her sophisticated sense of fashion.
According to author Lý Nhân Phan Thứ Lang, “Queen Nam Phuong had a preference for the fashion of Christian Dior and Balmain. She was also very fashionable and light purple was her favorite color. Perhaps because her life was more sorrowful than joyful, she chose the color purple as a result.”
In contemporary European-style clothing, Queen Nam Phuong retained her elegance and sophistication. Her Asian beauty seemed to harmonize perfectly with Western fashion. She wore pearl necklaces, tilted hats, and long dresses that went past her knees.
During the years of exile, she lived in luxury thanks to her wealthy family. Her parents, Nguyễn Hữu Hào, bought her countless properties and material wealth to alleviate her own sorrows. However, she chose to avoid the hustle and bustle of the city and sought happiness in the peaceful countryside of Chabrignac, 500km southwest of Paris.
In her final years, in a foreign land, Queen Nam Phuong still captured the hearts of the people around her. A former village chief in Chabrignac described her as a graceful, friendly, compassionate, and loving lady who cared for the servants in her household.
The French media always showed favoritism towards her and spoke highly of the woman from distant Annam (Vietnam).
