As Typhoon Yagi approaches, it’s understandable that people are concerned. Storms can bring various hazards, especially those related to electricity. It’s crucial that everyone enhances their knowledge to ensure safety.
Pruning Trees
In urban areas, city authorities are responsible for trimming trees. However, if you have private trees in your garden or yard, it’s your responsibility to prune them before the rainy season to ensure safety.
Stay Indoors During Storms
When you hear storm warnings, it’s best to find a sturdy shelter immediately. Avoid moving around during the storm, and don’t rush home if you’re in an office. Wait until the storm passes before venturing out.
Avoiding Dangers:
Do not stand under power poles, substation canopies, or large trees for shelter. Always seek a sturdy building.
Keep away from grounding wires, electrical wires, and guy wires of power poles and meters.
Do not go up to the roof or areas where electrical wires are present.
Do not attempt to fix outdoor electrical wires or equipment.
Do not use electrical structures (power poles, transformers, or electrical cabinets) to secure civil engineering works.
When indoors, stay away from windows and doors, especially during strong thunderstorms.
Be Cautious with Indoor Electrical Appliances
If you’re not at home, turn off the main electrical switch to prevent any issues in case of flooding. Unplug appliances like televisions when not in use. It’s advisable to limit the use of electrical appliances during storms, lightning, and strong winds.
In the event of flooding, immediately cut off the power supply to your home. Do not touch any electrical equipment or appliances with wet hands or while barefoot on wet floors.
Act Quickly to Shut Off Power
During flooding, promptly turn off the main electrical switch and circuit breakers to prevent water from reaching electrical outlets and causing electrical hazards. Do not attempt to fix electrical issues during a storm, and stay off roofs and balconies, especially if electrical wires are present.
It’s advisable to stay indoors and avoid going out during storms to prevent accidents and falling trees or branches. Unfortunately, there have already been tragic accidents and fallen trees due to strong winds at the beginning of the rainy season. So, please be extra cautious.
