Avoid Planting Marigolds
Marigolds are familiar ornamental plants with durable and easy-to-grow flowers. However, marigolds have a distinctive pungent odor that can be unpleasant when planted in front of a house. Additionally, marigolds attract insects, so planting them near your home may result in an infestation.
Traditionally, marigolds are also associated with graveyards, so having them in front of your house may create an eerie atmosphere instead of a cheerful and lucky one. That’s why marigolds are often planted in parks and vegetable gardens to enhance their beauty and protect crops from pests.
Steer Clear of Thorny and Spiky Plants
Feng shui discourages the presence of thorny and spiky plants with sharp leaves, favoring those with large, round-edged leaves instead. Trees like bitter melons, cacti, and other thorny varieties are believed to bring bad luck and create a hostile environment. Additionally, such plants can pose a safety hazard to people and animals.
Don’t Plant Mulberry Trees
Mulberry trees are cultivated for silkworms, medicine, and wood, and their branches are used to ward off evil spirits. However, they are considered to have strong yin energy, which goes against the principles of feng shui when planted in front of a house. Furthermore, the word for mulberry in Vietnamese (“tang”) sounds similar to the word for funeral (“tang tóc”), making it an inauspicious choice.
Willows are a No-Go
Willows may be beautiful, but their drooping form doesn’t bode well according to feng shui. Such plants are believed to bring death and darkness, and their sad appearance is thought to make residents of the house feel the same way. Willows are often planted in cemeteries, further enhancing their association with death and making them unsuitable for the front of your home, as they may make your house feel cold and imbalanced.
Avoid Planting Cypress Trees
Cypress trees are tall, straight, and long-living, but they are typically found in cemeteries, providing shade for visitors to graves. Thus, planting them in front of your house may give the impression that it is a grave. For this reason, it is best to avoid this type of tree in front of your home according to feng shui principles.
