Our ancestors wisely advised, “Heed the words of the elderly, for their wisdom is invaluable and trustworthy.” Another saying goes, “When shopping for groceries, remember: ‘Buy pork, avoid the neck; buy fish, skip the pike.'”

While these sayings may sound familiar, their meanings are often misunderstood. It was only recently that I truly understood the reasoning behind these ancient words of wisdom.

Buy Pork, Avoid the Neck

The old saying, “Buy pork, avoid the neck,” is based on the fact that the neck of a pig tends to have a higher fat content. Consuming too much fat can lead to sudden weight gain and negatively impact cardiovascular and brain health. Additionally, the lymphatic system, which filters and traps foreign microorganisms, inflammatory cells, and toxins, is concentrated in this area. Regular consumption of pork neck may pose potential health risks.

The saying goes, “Buy pork, but avoid the neck.”

Moreover, preparing pork neck can be challenging as it is difficult to completely remove the lymph nodes. During the slaughtering process, the neck tends to release a significant amount of blood, increasing the risk of bacterial contamination. Therefore, it is advisable to exercise caution when handling and consuming this particular cut of meat.

Buy Fish, Skip the Pike

Pike, a type of freshwater fish, is favored by many for its tender and sweet-tasting flesh. However, due to its numerous fine bones, it is not suitable for young children as it may pose a choking hazard. Considering this, our ancestors advised, “Buy fish, skip the pike.” In the past, when times were tough, people tended to opt for fish with more meat to stretch their budget.

Pike is a freshwater fish known for its tender and sweet flesh.

Nowadays, with a greater emphasis on nutrition and health, people may choose to purchase pike for its nutritional benefits. A pike soup, for example, can be a nourishing dish that supports kidney health and overall well-being.
