The rice in Hoang Su Phi ripens later, usually in mid-October. For adventure travel enthusiasts, Hoang Su Phi marks the completion of the rice-admiring circuit in the northern highlands.

While it may not be as famous as the rice terraces of Y Ty or Mu Cang Chai, the grandeur of Hoang Su Phi’s rice terraces is no less stunning. With the highest rice terraces in the country, Ban Luoc and Ban Phung, along with the national scenic sites of Thong Nguyen and Nam Ty, Hoang Su Phi offers captivating stops for travelers.

Ideal Timing

Every year, after the rice harvest in Mu Cang Chai, it’s the perfect time to witness the golden terraces of Hoang Su Phi. Depending on the area, the rice will ripen gradually over a month, but the best time to visit is usually the second week of October.

Transportation

Hoang Su Phi now has an improved road system, allowing cars to access the area. However, as the attractions are scattered across the district, the most convenient way to get around is by motorbike due to its maneuverability.

Alternatively, you can take a bus from Hanoi to Tan Quang town and then transfer to a local bus to reach Vinh Quang, the district’s center.

Main Attractions

Considering Vinh Quang as the center of a circle, the main attractions in Hoang Su Phi are within a 30-40 km radius.

Heaven’s Gate Pass and the National Relic Site of Thong Nguyen and Nam Ty: At the Tan Quang intersection, one road leads to Ha Giang city, and the other goes to Vinh Quang town.

There are numerous spots in Hoang Su Phi to admire the golden rice fields

Po Lo, Then Chu Phin, Ban Luoc, and Ban Phung: These are the most picturesque spots for rice admiration around Vinh Quang, Hoang Su Phi, each located about 20-30km from the town center.

While Ban Luoc boasts the largest rice terrace area in the country, spanning 200 hectares, Ban Phung offers a perfect valley view of the rice terraces.
