Salbutamol is a common fattening agent used in livestock farming, but its residue can be significantly harmful to human health if not controlled. Let’s find out in detail how harmful it can be if humans consume Salbutamol-containing cattle.
1 The situation of cattle meat containing Salbutamol flooding on social media
Recently, on popular social networking sites like Facebook, there have been shared information about buying and selling a type of beef called Sal beef, described by sellers as 100% fresh beef, imported from neighboring countries. What is important but few people pay attention to is that this type of beef is raised with Salbutamol, one of the top 3 fattening agents in the list of chemicals banned for use in livestock farming in Vietnam.
Many people feel anxious and worried when they first hear the name of this type of beef, although there has not been any evidence of beef containing Salbutamol being sold, people should still be aware of the health hazards of this type of meat and avoid consuming them.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has issued a directive requesting localities to strictly control the farming and slaughter of poultry and livestock. Because Salbutamol is increasingly being used excessively and is extremely harmful to consumers.
2 How dangerous is beef containing Salbutamol?
Salbutamol is a substance that has been listed by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations as one of the banned substances prohibited for use in livestock activities. However, many farmers or traders still use this substance to increase the lean meat ratio, reduce fat content, make the meat look fresh, beautiful, and sell at higher prices.
Beef or other meats containing Salbutamol can still retain this substance even after cooking without being lost due to high temperatures.
According to Professor Nguyen Duy Thinh (Biotechnology – Food Technology Institute, Hanoi University of Technology), when consuming too much of this substance, the human body may experience symptoms such as tremors, nausea, dizziness, headaches, abdominal pain, and even increase the risk of cancer and heart disease.
3 3 signs of beef that should not be purchased
- Abnormal red beef
Naturally, beef is a type of red meat with a fresh red or dark red color. But if a piece of beef is fed with chemicals, it will have a brighter and shinier red color.
During processing, the piece of meat will separate the lean and fat parts, and the taste of the meat will also be lost.
- Beef without elasticity
Good beef must have high elasticity, if the beef has poor elasticity, pressing it will leave a dent indicating that it has been dead for a long time.
- Meat with strange odor
All types of meat have a characteristic smell, if the beef has a strange, rotten, or antibiotic smell, it should not be purchased.
Above are some information about Sal beef that many people are concerned about. Hopefully, with the above information, you will be able to choose fresh and safe food for your family!
