A good set of kitchen knives is essential for any home cook. Over time, with regular use, the blades can become dull and make it difficult to chop and slice efficiently. Not to mention, improper care can lead to rust, which is not only unsightly but also a health hazard.
When your knives need a refresh, instead of reaching for a complex sharpening tool, try this hack using toothpaste.
Start by applying a small amount of toothpaste (any kind will do, but those with mild abrasives are preferred) to the blade, focusing on areas with rust or stains. You can use a thin wooden stick or any suitable utensil to spread the paste evenly, being careful to avoid direct contact with the sharp edge.

Next, grab a plate or bowl and flip it over. Sprinkle some salt and add a few drops of white vinegar to the bottom. Holding the knife at a 20-degree angle to the rim, drag the blade across the bottom in a smooth motion, from the handle to the tip. Avoid the back-and-forth motion as it’s challenging to maintain the correct angle, and you won’t achieve the desired sharpness.
The salt and vinegar create an abrasive surface similar to a sharpening stone, enhancing the knife’s edge. This method also helps remove any remaining stains or residue on the blade.
Spend about a minute on each side of the blade, and then test the knife’s sharpness by cutting through a piece of produce. If it’s not sharp enough, repeat the process. Once you’re satisfied, rinse the knife with water and dry it thoroughly with a clean cloth.
To maintain your knives, always hand-wash and dry them after use, and store them in a dry, accessible place, out of reach of children. With this simple toothpaste, salt, and vinegar trick, you can keep your knives in top shape without investing in expensive sharpening tools.
