The Remitly team observes that the people of South Africa are incredibly warm and welcoming to visitors. They are known for their friendliness, love of a good joke, and openness to engaging with strangers on the street. Another plus for South Africa is that it has 11 official languages, including English, Afrikaans, and nine indigenous languages, making it easier for travelers to connect with locals.

Greece comes in second with a score of 33.71. According to the survey, Greeks are open to striking up conversations with strangers and are keen on building new friendships and relationships. The Greek language even has a specific word, “philoxenia,” which translates to “friend to a stranger” or “hospitality.” This reflects a long-standing cultural value that makes visitors want to return to the country time and again.

Greeks often invite new acquaintances to their homes for a spitiko meal (homemade food). It is also common for locals to visit the homes of foreigners and gift them local produce like tomatoes, cheese, pastries, and olive oil, as reported by Greek Reporter.

Ranking third on the list is Croatia, with a score of 33.5. Remitly notes that tourism is a vital part of Croatia’s economy, and as a result, its people are known for their politeness and hospitality. Croatia also boasts a vibrant coffee culture, which helps newcomers feel less lonely and facilitates making new friends.

Dr. Tanya King, a senior lecturer in anthropology at Deakin University in Victoria, has shared that many people move to Australia to start anew, leaving behind the rigid class system of the United Kingdom. This is one of the reasons behind Australia’s friendly culture.

Germany ranks eighth with a score of 32.66, outperforming neighboring countries like Belgium, France, and the Netherlands. While small talk is not as common in German culture as in other European countries, Germans are very welcoming to visitors and new residents, according to Remitly.
