Are Chopsticks with Mold on Them Harmful to Health? Fact-Checked
According to Sức khỏe & Đời sống [Health & Life] Newspaper, PGS.TS Phạm Cẩm Phương, Director of the Center for Oncology and Nuclear Medicine (Bach Mai Hospital), stated that mold found in foods such as peanuts, beans, and corn can produce aflatoxin, a toxic substance. Aflatoxin is a mycotoxin produced by certain Aspergillus molds and is known to have at least 16 variants, with Aflatoxin B1 being the most potent. It can cause liver toxicity and, in severe cases, liver cancer.
However, no current research directly links the presence of aflatoxin to moldy chopsticks or cutting boards. Nonetheless, using unsanitary moldy utensils can increase the risk of acute illnesses and other types of poisoning.
Tips to Clean Moldy Wooden Chopsticks
– Salt
Bring a pot of water to a boil and add a pinch of salt. Place the moldy chopsticks in the pot and let it boil for about 15 minutes.
Then, remove the chopsticks and dry them with a clean cloth. Sun-dry the chopsticks for at least one day.
– Lemon
Lemon is not only great for cooking but also for household cleaning.
You can use lemon to clean your wooden chopsticks. Simply squeeze some lemon juice and dilute it with boiled water. Soak the chopsticks in this solution for 10-15 minutes. If the water cools down, add more boiled water to continue soaking the chopsticks.
After soaking, remove the chopsticks and dry them with a cloth. Ensure they are completely dry before storing them.
– Vinegar and Honey
The combination of vinegar and honey will not only clean the mold off your chopsticks but also make them shine.
Mix vinegar and honey in a large bowl and stir well. Dip a clean cloth into this mixture, wring out the excess, and wipe the chopsticks until all the mold is gone. After cleaning with vinegar and honey, sun-dry the chopsticks.
– Baking Soda
Baking soda is a great cleaning agent. Mix it with lemon juice and apply the paste to the chopsticks. Sun-dry them for about 30 minutes, then rinse with hot water and sun-dry again before storing.
Some Do’s and Don’ts for Wooden Chopsticks
Avoid soaking wooden chopsticks in water for extended periods. After use, wash them thoroughly, let them air dry completely, and then store them in a clean container. Remember to clean the chopstick holder regularly, and replace your chopsticks every 4-5 months.
