Cleaning Tips for a Yellowing Toilet Bowl and Lid
Tips for cleaning a yellowing toilet bowl and lid
The toilet is an everyday utility used by everyone and can be a source of unpleasant odors in the house, so it needs to be cleaned regularly. Over time, the toilet lid and seat may turn yellow.
To clean these yellow stains, follow the steps below.
First, choose an appropriate cleaning product. The most convenient option is to use ready-made toilet bowl cleaners available in the market. However, if you are concerned about the potential health impact of chemicals, you can opt for natural ingredients such as white vinegar, fresh lemon, salt, and baking soda.
Scrubbing toilet stains is often ineffective because the cleaning agent doesn’t have enough time to work. If using a ready-made cleaner, be sure to read the instructions carefully. If using vinegar or lemon, let it sit on the surface for at least 10 minutes before scrubbing.
Pour your chosen cleaning solution onto the stained areas and let it sit for a few minutes.
Then, use a cloth or brush to scrub the stains. Don’t forget to wear gloves and a mask during this process.
Next, mix 1/4 cup of baking soda with 1/2 cup of vinegar or warm water to form a thick paste. Apply this paste to the stained areas of the toilet bowl and let it sit for about 20 minutes.
In the next step, use a toilet brush to scrub the bowl again. As you scrub, rinse with warm water. Warm water is more effective at removing stains than cold water.
Once you’ve scrubbed the entire surface of the toilet bowl, rinse it thoroughly with water to remove all the dirt and residue.
As a result, your toilet will look brighter and cleaner, and the yellow stains on the lid and seat will be noticeably lighter.
Note that the effectiveness of cleaning an old and infrequently cleaned toilet will be lower. Additionally, a low-quality toilet is more prone to staining, and removing these stains can be more challenging. If the toilet lid is severely yellowed and cannot be cleaned with regular cleaning agents, consider replacing it with a new one.
Some additional tips for toilet maintenance
– Keep the toilet lid closed when flushing and when not in use
While it may be a common habit to leave the toilet lid open, it is not advisable, especially when flushing. When the lid is open, bacteria and dirt can be splashed onto surrounding surfaces and even onto your body through tiny water droplets.
It is also recommended to keep the lid closed when the toilet is not in use to prevent unpleasant odors from spreading.
– Use a trash can with a lid
For a cleaner bathroom, use a trash can with a lid. If your trash can doesn’t have a lid, bacteria can easily spread in the humid environment, causing unpleasant odors. Clean your bathroom trash can daily to prevent bacteria from thriving and keep odors at bay.
– Keep the bathroom well-ventilated
To maintain a fresh and clean bathroom, ensure proper ventilation by keeping the window open and using an exhaust fan to reduce moisture and eliminate odors.
