When constructing houses, people tend to prioritize a well-built and leak-proof roof. Similarly, many animals in nature seek sheltered places to rest. Interestingly, birds often choose to build their nests in trees without an overhead cover.

Why do most bird nests face upwards towards the sky?

While some bird species construct their nests under eaves to shield themselves from wind and rain, the majority of bird nests are built on tree branches. Compared to nests under eaves, those on branches have a much simpler design. The primary purpose of a bird’s nest built on a branch is to nurture and raise their young until they are ready to leave the nest and fend for themselves.

Some bird species build their nests under eaves for protection from the elements.

Bird nests are typically temporary dwellings, not meant for long-term habitation. Once the chicks have reached independence, the nest is seldom reused. Bird nests are strategically placed in open areas, providing ample lighting and allowing parent birds to keep watch over their young and the surrounding environment, thus ensuring the healthy development of their chicks.

The upward-facing opening of the nest provides sufficient space for the birds to move around. During rainy weather, parent birds take turns caring for their chicks, using their wings to provide shelter and create a warm and dry environment for their offspring.

Bird nests with upward-facing openings allow for ample bird movement.

Adult birds, with their well-developed plumage, possess natural protection against the cold and are less susceptible to illnesses even when wet from the rain. Their robust physiology also contributes to their resilience.
