Flowers are an indispensable offering on ancestral altars during festive occasions, the full moon, and the first day of the month. Offering fresh flowers symbolizes reverence and purity in the worship space. It is also believed to enhance positive energy and attract fortune to the family, with the blessings of deities and ancestors.
Not everyone knows the correct placement of a flower vase on the altar.
Should the flower vase be placed on the left side of the altar?
According to feng shui principles, the flower vase should be placed on the left side of the altar (in the case of using only one vase). This arrangement stems from the principle of “East vase, West fruit,” meaning the flower vase is placed in the East direction, and a fruit plate is placed in the West. This rule follows the natural law of the sun rising in the East and setting in the West; trees must bloom before bearing fruit. Therefore, placing the flower vase in the East and the fruit plate in the West aligns with nature, bringing smoothness and ease to all matters.
To determine the directions on the altar, the homeowner should stand facing outwards from the perspective of the altar. The left side of the ancestors (the left side from their perspective) is considered the East, and the symmetrical right side is considered the West.
For altars facing South, placing the flower vase in the East has its own significance. When the East or Southeast wind blows, the delicate fragrance of the flowers will permeate the worship space, bringing a sense of peace and purity. Placing the fruit plate on the right side also makes it convenient for arranging the offerings.
If the homeowner prefers to use two flower vases, one vase should be placed on each side of the altar, with the fruit plate in the center, in front of the incense burner. This arrangement creates a balanced and harmonious feel, conveying a sense of fullness and warmth without detracting from the initial meaning of the flowers and fruit.
Should you choose one or two flower vases for the altar?
The number of flower vases on the altar depends on the family’s circumstances. If the altar is small, such as a hanging altar or a small-sized altar in an apartment, a single vase (placed according to the “East vase, West fruit” principle mentioned above) is suitable. Avoid overcrowding the altar with too many vases, making it difficult to arrange items and negatively impacting the positive energy and balance of the space.
If the family has a more spacious altar that can accommodate two flower vases without interfering with the display of other worship items, then a pair of vases (one on each side of the altar) can be chosen to create symmetry and balance.
The flower vases on the altar should preferably be made of ceramic, porcelain, or glass, while materials like copper and iron are best avoided.
Offerings of fresh flowers on the altar are recommended to be fragrant and pleasant. Avoid flowers with sharp thorns or unpleasant odors. Before arranging the flowers, trim the stems and leaves neatly for a tidy appearance, longer-lasting freshness, and to prevent them from obstructing other items on the altar.
