If you have ever struggled with opening tough oyster shells, you’re not alone. It can be a frustrating and painful process. But fear not! Today, I will provide you with a simple and effective method for opening oyster shells without any hassle or harm to your hands. This technique works well for both Pacific oysters and rock oysters, which are the most commonly found varieties in Vietnam. So, let’s dive right into our step-by-step guide for opening oyster shells effortlessly and safely.

Step 1

Before opening the shells, it is advisable to properly clean the oyster shells. This can be achieved by using a high-pressure water spray or a brush to remove any dirt or debris present on the rough shells. It is important to note that if you do not plan to consume the oysters immediately, it is best to refrain from cleaning the shells right away as it may result in the oysters losing their freshness and vitality.

To ensure a seamless opening, carefully inspect the edges of the oyster. If a gap is identified, skillfully guide the tip of the knife into the opening, allowing it to delve into the interior. With a controlled motion, gently rotate the knife, causing the oyster shell to yield. While doing so, it is vital to maintain proximity of the knife to the flat shell surface in order to sever the connecting muscle binding the two halves of the shell. Finally, detach the flat shell, effectively concluding the procedure.

For rock oysters with harder shells than Pacific oysters, or in cases where there is no gap or the gap is too small at the edge of the oyster, it is necessary to methodically break open the edge of the oyster using a hammer. Once this is done, the same steps as previously mentioned can be followed.
