Acciaroli, a village in Italy, is known for its significant population of centenarians – 81 out of 700 residents – and above-average life expectancy, reaching 92 years for women and 85 years for men. The average life expectancy in Italy is generally 85 for women and 81 for men. Research conducted by Dr. Alan Maisel, a cardiologist from the University of San Diego, and colleagues from the University of Sapienza in Rome indicates that the residents of Acciaroli have a special ability to resist age-related diseases such as heart disease, memory loss, and other chronic conditions. Notably, the microcirculation system of some elderly individuals in this village remains as flexible as that of a 20-year-old, despite most residents having a “chubby” physique but a low rate of diabetes. The most surprising discovery by scientists about the key factor contributing to this exceptional longevity is the consumption of rosemary, a herb commonly grown and used by the entire village, which could be the key to longevity.
Lower blood sugar
Rosemary is not only a popular spice but also known for its ability to control blood sugar levels and maintain stable blood sugar levels. The phytocompounds in rosemary can inhibit the absorption of glucose in the digestive tract, helping to limit the rapid increase in blood sugar after a meal.
Moreover, studies have shown that rosemary is beneficial in regulating cholesterol, with the ability to reduce LDL cholesterol, also known as “bad” cholesterol, and increase HDL cholesterol, or “good” cholesterol, in the body.
Good for digestion
Rosemary is known for its ability to support liver detoxification and promote the digestive fluid secretion process. It also plays a role in reducing fermentation in the stomach, making it ideal for use after heavy meals. Additionally, the antibacterial properties of rosemary provide benefits in dealing with conditions such as colds or preventing urinary tract infections.
Anti-cancer
According to information from the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR), rosemary contains a high level of carnosol, a substance that can inhibit the growth of cancer cells, as well as enhance the body’s immune system, restrict the production of hormones associated with cancer development, and act as a powerful antioxidant.
Studies have shown that rosemary extract can block the division of cancer cells, thereby limiting the formation and growth of tumors. The combination of rosemary and curcumin, a component found in turmeric, is believed to have the ability to prevent breast cancer.
Good for memory
Rosemary not only has the effect of improving mood but is also considered a method of protecting the immune system, promoting blood circulation, resisting premature aging, and improving memory. Research has shown that phytochemicals in rosemary can slow down the degradation of acetylcholine, an important neurotransmitter for nerve transmission. Decreased acetylcholine levels are often observed in cases of Alzheimer’s disease.
Enhancing mental health
Rosemary emits a unique fragrance that has the ability to refresh the mood and enhance alertness. This characteristic is beneficial in dispelling fatigue and bringing a new mental vitality.
Based on the findings of a study from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in the United States, combining rosemary oil with other aromatic oils can help reduce cortisol levels, thereby reducing anxiety. Other studies have also shown that using fragrant products containing rosemary essential oil can reduce stress and anxiety in nursing students.
