The Department of Education and Training of Hanoi has provided guidelines stating that students graduating from secondary school in the 2022 – 2023 academic year must submit applications for admission at their current educational institution.

The application for admission to grade 10 requires the following documents:

  • Registration form for admission;
  • Birth certificate;
  • Secondary school graduation certificate or temporary secondary school graduation certificate;
  • Academic transcript;
  • Identification card or citizen identity card of the student, parents, or legal guardian.

For students who study ahead, start school early, or start late compared to the general regulations, additional documents such as a certificate confirming the priority regime and a permission letter are required.

Students who have graduated from secondary school also need to provide a certificate stating that they have no criminal record or any violations of the law, issued by the local authorities of their place of residence.

2 Registering desired options for the grade 10 exam in Hanoi in 2023

On March 31, 2023, the Department of Education and Training of Hanoi issued an official letter guiding the enrollment for grade 10 in public high schools for the 2023-2024 academic year.

Registration for grade 10 non-specialized programs:

Number of desired options:

Each student can register up to 3 desired options for admission to 3 public high schools, in order of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd choice. The 1st and 2nd choices must be in the same admission area, while the 3rd choice can be in any admission area.

If only 2 desired options for admission to 2 public high schools are registered, the 1st choice must be in the specified admission area, and the 2nd choice can be in any admission area.

If only 1 desired option is registered for one public high school, it can be registered for a school in any admission area.

Note: Candidates are not allowed to change their desired options after registration!

Special cases:

Students who register the 1st choice for grade 10 non-specialized programs at Chu Van An High School (English), Son Tay High School, Viet Duc High School (German language class, 7-year program), or Ethnic Boarding High School must ensure that the 2nd choice (if any) is in the specified admission area, and the 3rd choice (if any) is in any admission area.

Students who register to apply for the Japanese language class (foreign language 1) can register for the 1st and 2nd choices at 2 out of 3 high schools: Chu Van An, Kim Lien, and Viet Duc. The 3rd choice (if any) can be in any admission area.

Registering desired options for self-financed public high schools

For students who only have a desire to study at self-financed public high schools that admit students based on the results of the entrance exam to non-specialized public high schools for the 2023-2024 academic year:

The student must participate in the entrance exam to obtain evaluation scores for admission to the school. In the registration form, the student should fill in the following:

  • Desired Option 1: Write the name of a public high school to attend the exam;
  • Desired Option 2: Write “NCL” in capital letters.

When registering for the entrance exam for grade 10 specialized programs, students must consider their desired options and their abilities in specialized subjects, as well as the schedule of exams for specialized subjects, to choose the appropriate options. Students are not allowed to change their registered specialized options.

Students can choose a maximum of 2 out of 4 following high schools to apply for admission: Hanoi Amsterdam High School, Nguyen Hue High School, Chu Van An High School, and Son Tay High School.

If a student has a desired option to apply for only 1 specialized class at 2 schools, they must clearly indicate the 1st choice school and the 2nd choice school.

In the case where a student only has a desired option to apply for a specialized class at 1 school, or the chosen specialized class is only available at 1 school, the registered school will be considered as the 1st choice.

In each exam session, students can only choose 1 specialized subject to take the exam.

For Chu Van An High School: Students from provinces and cities in the North region (from Thanh Hoa and beyond), who have excellent academic performance, good conduct in grade 9, and official awards in the provincial academic competition (from the third prize and above), can apply for the specialized class of the subject in which they received the award.

Exam dates: The entrance exam for grade 10 in public high schools in Hanoi for the 2023-2024 academic year will be held over two consecutive days: June 10, 2023, and June 11, 2023.

Candidates will take three separate exams: Mathematics, Literature, and Foreign Language. Specifically:

  • June 10, 2023, morning: Literature exam, duration: 120 minutes (from 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM);
  • June 10, 2023, afternoon: Foreign Language exam, duration: 60 minutes (from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM);

Note for the Foreign Language exam: Candidates must choose one of the five offered languages for the entrance exam to grade 10: English, French, German, Japanese, or Korean. They are allowed to choose a foreign language that is different from the one they are studying in secondary school.

On June 12, 2023, candidates who register for specialized programs will take specialized exams according to the following specific schedule:

  • Literature, Mathematics, Informatics, Biology, duration: 150 minutes (from 8:00 AM to 10:30 AM);
  • French, German, Japanese, Korean (substitute subject), duration: 120 minutes (from 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM);
  • Physics, History, Geography, duration: 150 minutes (from 2:00 PM to 4:30 PM);
  • Chemistry, English, duration: 120 minutes (from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM).

4 Calculating the entrance exam scores for grade 10 in Hanoi in 2023

The exams are graded on a scale of up to 10 points. The calculation method for the grade 10 entrance exam in Hanoi in 2023 remains the same as in 2022:

For non-specialized programs in public high schools

  • The Mathematics and Literature exams are assessed with a coefficient of 2;
  • The Foreign Language exam is assessed with a coefficient of 1.

The admission score = (Mathematics exam score + Literature exam score) x 2 + Foreign Language exam score + Priority score

  • The exam scores are on a scale of 10;
  • The priority score is based on the Regulations on Admission to Secondary and High Schools issued with Circular No. 11/2014/TT-BGDÐT, amended and supplemented by Circular No. 05/2018/TT-BGDÐT and Circular No. 18/2014/TT-BGDÐT:

Add 1.5 points for Group 1:

  • Children of martyrs;
  • Children of severely injured war veterans (with a labor capacity loss of 81% or more);
  • Children of severely injured veterans (with a labor capacity loss of 81% or more);
  • Children of persons granted “Certificate of policy beneficiary like war invalids” who have a labor capacity loss of 81% or more);
  • Children of persons who participated in the resistance war and were exposed to toxic chemicals;
  • Children of persons who participated in the revolutionary activities before January 1, 1945;
  • Children of persons who participated in the revolutionary activities from January 1, 1945, to the August Revolution in 1945.

Add 1 point for Group 2:

  • Children of heroes of the armed forces, children of labor heroes, and children of Vietnamese heroic mothers;
  • Children of severely injured war veterans (with a labor capacity loss of less than 81%);
  • Children of severely injured veterans (with a labor capacity loss of less than 81%);
  • Children of persons granted “Certificate of policy beneficiary like war invalids” who have a labor capacity loss of less than 81%.

Add 0.5 points for Group 3:

  • Individuals with ethnic minority parent(s);
  • Individuals belonging to ethnic minorities;
  • Students living and studying in economically and socially disadvantaged areas.

For specialized programs

Students applying for specialized programs will have to go through 2 rounds of exams, which include:

Preliminary round: The preliminary score = Academic competition and talent exam score + 4-year secondary school academic ranking score + Secondary school graduation score.

The criteria are evaluated as follows:

Results in participating in social activities, talent competitions organized at the provincial, national, regional, and international levels are assigned points as follows:

  • The first prize is assigned 5.0 points;
  • The second prize is assigned 4.0 points;
  • The third prize is assigned 3.0 points;
  • The encouragement prize is assigned 2.0 points.

Secondary school academic ranking over 4 years:

  • Excellent ranking is assigned 3.0 points;
  • Good ranking is assigned 2.0 points.

Secondary school graduation results:

  • Excellent rating is assigned 3.0 points;
  • Good rating is assigned 2.0 points.

Final round: The admission score = Total score of non-specialized exams (coefficient 1) + Score of specialized exams (coefficient 2)
