Phú Quốc’s Top-Ranked Global Fruit: A Renowned Specialty Harvested for Years, Priced at 60,000 VND/kg

As the year wanes, the Cao Phong hills transform into a breathtaking tapestry of golden oranges, heralding the harvest season and drawing visitors from afar. Nestled among the verdant orchards, guests are invited to handpick the plump, succulent fruits, indulging in their sweet, refreshing essence and the natural fragrance that has made these oranges a cherished delicacy.

Renowned for their exceptional sweetness, Cao Phong oranges also entice visitors with expansive orchards offering immersive tours and hands-on fruit-picking experiences.

Cultivated in the hilly terrain of Cao Phong, these oranges thrive in a cool climate with significant diurnal temperature variations and nutrient-rich, porous basalt soil. These optimal conditions foster trees that produce fruits with high sugar content and a subtle tangy note—a flavor profile unique to the region.

The oranges are medium-sized with a thin peel that ripens to a golden yellow or greenish-yellow hue. Inside, the segments are juicy, tender, and offer a refreshing balance of sweetness and mild acidity. Peeling the fruit releases a signature, gentle aroma from the rind, making it ideal for fresh consumption or juicing.

Notable varieties include Golden Heart, Canh, and V2, each with distinct harvest seasons and flavor characteristics. Golden Heart and Canh oranges are particularly prized during the year-end season for their exceptional juiciness and quality.

Orange cultivation in Cao Phong began in the 1960s with small-scale farms spanning a few dozen hectares. Over time, high economic returns and advancements in varietal selection and farming techniques have made oranges the region’s flagship crop. Today, many farmers manage large-scale orchards, adopting VietGAP standards and organic practices to enhance product quality.

After 3–4 years, the trees begin bearing fruit and can yield stable harvests for over a decade with proper care. The Cao Phong orange season typically runs from September to April, peaking between November and January—the perfect time to visit, when the hillsides glow with the golden hues of ripe oranges.

In recent years, many orchards have integrated agritourism into their operations. During harvest season, clean-farming groves welcome visitors for tours, photography, and DIY fruit-picking. Guests can explore lush green rows, learn about cultivation practices, identify naturally ripened fruits, and enjoy freshly picked oranges. This experience is particularly popular among families and young travelers during the year-end holidays.

Currently, Cao Phong oranges retail for approximately VND 30,000–40,000 per kilogram for standard varieties, while premium types like Golden Heart and Canh can command VND 45,000–60,000 per kilogram, depending on quality and seasonality. During peak season, the fruit is widely available in supermarkets, clean produce stores, and online marketplaces.

To ensure authenticity, consumers should purchase Cao Phong oranges directly from orchards, cooperatives, or reputable vendors. High-quality fruits typically feature a natural yellow color, thin peel, firm texture, and uneven sizing. When peeled, they emit a distinctive essential oil aroma, with juicy segments and a sweet, refreshing taste. Conversely, oranges with unnaturally glossy peels, overly uniform sizes, or no aroma when peeled may not be genuine Cao Phong produce.
