On a serene weekday morning, seven months into my pregnancy, I made a rare visit to my husband’s office to review documents before heading home to rest. My husband, a devoted entrepreneur, had always prioritized my well-being, even instructing his team, “Ensure my wife avoids stairs and heavy lifting.”
Each morning, he prepared a nutritious breakfast, and in the evenings, he gently massaged my feet to ease the cramps I often experienced. Regardless of his busy schedule, he accompanied me to every prenatal appointment, frequently canceling meetings to do so. After a previous failed marriage, I never imagined finding someone who would love and care for me so deeply.
That day, the company was hiring for a Sales Manager position. As I sat at the reception desk, the elevator doors opened, and a man stepped out.
I recognized him instantly, even from the side—it was my ex-husband. What left me speechless, however, was when he removed his black hat, revealing his hair.
At just 38, his head was almost entirely gray, with only a few scattered black strands remaining. His face was gaunt, his eyes sunken, and his expression bore the weight of countless sleepless nights. Had I not looked closely, I would have mistaken him for someone in his 50s.

He noticed me too, and our eyes met briefly. I walked over, cradling my baby bump. “How are you?”
He glanced at my pregnant belly and smiled softly. “You’re… expecting? Congratulations.”
We exchanged a few brief words before the secretary invited him into the interview room. I stood outside the closed door for a long time, my mind consumed by a single question: In just five years… what had happened to him?
That afternoon, after the recruitment session ended, he texted me, asking to meet at a café near the office. Sitting across from each other, I learned that his life was nothing like I had imagined.
About a year after our divorce, he married his current wife. They had been trying for a baby for years with no success. After seeking medical advice, they discovered both carried a rare genetic condition. To have a healthy child, they needed IVF combined with pre-implantation genetic screening—a process far more costly than standard IVF.
After multiple failed attempts, they finally welcomed a child. But their joy was short-lived, as their baby was diagnosed with a congenital condition requiring frequent hospitalizations.
“We’ve exhausted all our savings on our child’s treatment,” he said, his voice steady but his eyes red-rimmed. “My hair turned gray during that time.”
To increase their income, he decided to leave his previous company and seek new opportunities. “I no longer care about titles or pride. I just need enough money to treat my child and continue our journey to have another baby.”

Hearing this, my eyes welled up with unshed tears. We had parted ways because our paths diverged, not due to betrayal. I had always wished for him to find happiness.
I never imagined that his happiness would come at such a high cost. That evening, I shared the entire story with my husband. He was silent for a moment before asking, “Do you think he’s suitable for the position?”
I nodded. My husband smiled gently. “Then tomorrow, I’ll have HR send him the job offer.”
A few days later, my ex-husband officially became the Sales Manager of the company. From then on, we maintained a professional relationship, occasionally exchanging pleasantries. Neither of us brought up the past. I had my own family, and he had his to protect.
Sometimes, not every marriage that ends leaves behind bitterness. There are those who walk together for a while, then choose different paths. Years later, when they meet again, what remains isn’t love, but kindness—enough to want to help when the other is in need.
