Born in 1914 in Kiến Hòa District, Định Tường Province (now Gò Công Town, Tiền Giang Province), Empress Nam Phương, originally Nguyễn Hữu Thị Lan, hailed from one of the most affluent Catholic families in the South during her era.
Celebrated as Vietnam’s last empress, Nam Phương’s unparalleled beauty was legendary. Her striking appearance earned her the title of Miss Indochina three times, cementing her status as an icon of grace and elegance.
At the age of 12, she was sent to France by her family, where she acquired French citizenship and studied at the prestigious Couvent des Oiseaux school in Paris.
After completing her education, she returned to Vietnam and met King Bảo Đại at a 1932 banquet held at the renowned La Palace Hotel in Đà Lạt.

In *Nam Phương – The Last Empress*, her passion for fashion from Christian Dior and Balmain is prominently featured. Over a decade of marriage, she bore Emperor Bảo Đại five children: Bảo Long, Phương Mai, Phương Liên, Phương Dung, and Bảo Thang.
In 1945, Emperor Bảo Đại abdicated and moved to Hanoi as an advisor, leaving Nam Phương to raise their children alone at An Định Palace in Huế. In 1947, she relocated her family to France, where she spent the remainder of her life.
