“The Day My Wife Announced Her Pregnancy: Her Family Rejoiced, but I Quietly Planned Our Divorce”

Your talent is undeniable, yet from the very beginning, I sensed the artifice beneath your captivating performance.

Five years younger than me, she embodied gentleness and skill, effortlessly winning my parents’ hearts as if she were their own child. On our wedding day, the one event both families eagerly awaited was the arrival of a grandchild.

Few knew that just months before our marriage, during a routine workplace health checkup, my doctor recommended further tests due to abnormal fertility indicators.

The results were devastating. Diagnosed with azoospermia—a condition where semen contains no sperm—the doctor explained that additional tests were necessary to determine the cause, but natural conception was virtually impossible.

I sat in stunned silence for a long time. I considered sharing the truth with my fiancée, but seeing her excitement for our wedding and both families’ anticipation, I lacked the courage.

I told myself we’d explore treatments or IVF if there was still hope. My only mistake was keeping this crucial secret from her.

After the wedding, our life was serene. I quietly researched fertility treatments, planning to reveal everything at the right moment and face the challenges together.

However, all plans were upended one evening. During a family dinner, my wife suddenly produced a pregnancy test and announced with a radiant smile, “We’re expecting a baby.”

My mother dropped her chopsticks and embraced her daughter-in-law tightly. My father laughed heartily, calling relatives to share the news. The dinner table buzzed with excitement, as if we had won the lottery. My father called family members to celebrate, and my mother immediately booked five tables for a weekend party.

Only I remained frozen. I looked at the pregnancy test, then at the beaming woman before me. In my mind, I heard the doctor’s words from years ago: “You have no sperm.”

That night, as the house slept, I sat alone in my study. Before me lay the freshly printed divorce papers. I didn’t cry. I felt only an emptiness in my heart.

The next morning, I asked my wife, “How long have you been pregnant?” She smiled and said almost two months.

I tried to stay calm. “Are you sure the baby is mine?”

Her smile faded. She looked at me for a few seconds, then asked, “What do you mean?”

I placed my medical records, test results, and the doctor’s conclusion on the table. “Before we married, I learned I was infertile. I was wrong to hide it from you. I planned to explore IVF with you later. But I cannot be the father of this child.”

The room fell silent. My wife repeatedly shook her head, suggesting the doctor might be wrong, that miracles could happen. I calmly replied, “If you wish, we can get tested again today.”

Hearing this, she burst into tears. After nearly half an hour of silence, she confessed everything. During my frequent business trips, she had developed feelings for a former colleague. Their relationship lasted only a few months.

When she discovered her pregnancy, she panicked and planned to keep it a secret, thinking I would never find out. She knelt and apologized, saying she still loved me and would terminate the pregnancy if I forgave her. But I simply shook my head.

The child is innocent; the fault lies with the adults. A few days later, I explained everything to my parents. At first, my mother didn’t believe me. She even blamed me for hiding my condition for so long. After reading the medical records, she could only cover her face and cry.

Perhaps the most painful thing wasn’t my infertility, but the shattered trust in our marriage. We finalized our divorce peacefully, with no disputes or resentment.

Before signing the papers, I told her, “I forgive you, but I cannot continue living with such a significant lie.”

In the end, I realized the greatest regret wasn’t my infertility. It was my silence that created a void for other secrets to grow. If I had mustered the courage to tell the truth to the one I loved, perhaps our story would have taken a different turn.
