The Enchanted Tale: Unveiling the Legendary Story of the Coffee Tree

Nestled in the heart of Vietnam, the Central Highlands reveal a breathtaking mosaic of untamed beauty and lush, fertile soil. It is here, amidst the vibrant red earth, that the coffee plant has discovered its ideal haven. Thriving in this unique landscape, the coffee tree’s resilience and vigor perfectly capture the indomitable spirit of the Highlands.

Nestled in the heart of an ancient land, where rivers converged and waterfalls danced, lay a serene village cradled by lush cornfields and cassava groves. The villagers thrived in harmony, their lives enriched by skilled hunters and master weavers, all bound by a deep sense of community. Each evening, within the communal house, elders shared tales of heroic ancestors who had vanquished fearsome beasts, ensuring prosperity for generations.

With the arrival of spring, wildflowers carpeted the earth, and gentle rains revitalized the land. The rhythmic beats of gongs and drums signaled the sowing season and festive celebrations.

The communal fire blazed brightly, and rice wine flowed freely. Hand in hand, the villagers danced and sang, offering prayers for a bountiful harvest. They sought balance between rain and sunshine, envisioning plump corn and abundant rice, while the spirits of the river and mountains remained benevolent, and fierce creatures stayed at bay.

One dawn, as the sun’s first rays pierced the mist, the village elder summoned everyone to the communal house. He announced the birth of a baby boy, destined to embody wisdom and courage. This child, he proclaimed, would possess the strength of a tiger, the agility of a snake, and the speed of a deer—a true son of the village.

The villagers then journeyed to the village’s edge, where the baby’s bathing ceremony took place by a thundering waterfall. After the elder invoked the blessings of the river and mountain spirits, each villager took turns patting the baby’s head and offering good wishes. In his mother’s arms, the baby kicked vigorously, his radiant brown skin, wide mouth, and bright eyes captivating all.

“Indeed, he is a true son of our village. It won’t be long before he fulfills the elder’s words,” they all agreed.

The boy grew up healthy, like every other child in the village. At the age of three, he lost his father. With the village’s support, his mother and he managed to live a less difficult life. Raised in the warmth of the community, he developed a deep love for his village.

Time passed swiftly, and the boy grew into a strong young man, a forest songbird. The elder imparted many hunting skills to him. Though a skilled hunter, he never harmed harmless animals.

Deer and other forest creatures saw him as a friend, often playing with him whenever he entered the forest. His singing voice was so enchanting that birds would stop chirping, fish would cease swimming, and even herds of deer would pause, fearing they might fall into the valley. His melodies brought comfort to the villagers after their tiring days in the fields.

One day, as peace reigned, disaster struck unexpectedly. Early one morning, while hunters checked traps and women washed clothes by the stream, a strange bird appeared out of nowhere. Its wings were so vast they blotted out the sky, and the wind from its wings toppled trees. With claws as sharp as spears, it swooped down on the village, causing screams and chaos. Many houses collapsed, and numerous villagers were captured by the monstrous bird, leaving everyone in terror.

The elder ordered the villagers to take refuge in the forest, but the brave young men stayed behind, vowing to destroy the bird to protect their home. Armed with spears, bows, and traps, they prepared to face the beast.

The next morning, the bird returned, following its usual path. As it landed in the village, its foot became entangled in a large trap. Arrows and spears flew from all directions, and large trees were toppled onto it. Though wounded, the bird lashed out furiously, destroying houses. Despite their valiant efforts, the villagers’ weapons could not defeat the bird, and many lost their lives.

Witnessing the devastation, the elder led the villagers in search of a new land. Leaving behind their cherished homeland, they embarked on a perilous journey filled with hunger, disease, and danger.

Exhaustion and illness claimed many lives along the way. They marched on, but the new land remained elusive, with only dense, ominous forests in sight. Nights were spent huddled around fires, seeking warmth and protection from the surrounding predators.

The elder’s hair turned white, and his eyes sank deep into their sockets. Each night, he sat silently by the fire, guarding the villagers, and each morning, he led them onward. But their provisions dwindled, and despair spread among the group. Determined to save his village, the young man decided to confront the monstrous bird. His mother wept, and the elder, after a moment of contemplation, spoke:

“I understand your resolve, but the enemy is far stronger than you. Many have perished trying to defeat it. Legends speak of a sacred iron on the highest mountain peak, veiled in perpetual clouds. Only a sword forged from this iron can defeat the bird, but the journey is fraught with peril. What is your decision?”

The young man replied, “Elder, I am resolute. No matter the difficulty, I will not falter.”

Bidding farewell to his mother and the villagers, the young man set off in the direction the elder had indicated. He crossed raging rivers and treacherous waterfalls, his feet carrying him toward the setting sun. Dense forests, thorns, and wild beasts tested his resolve, but his ingenuity kept him moving forward.

Finally, he reached the summit of the highest mountain. There, the sacred iron glowed brilliantly in the sunlight, and his physical pain seemed to vanish. Holding the iron, he felt a surge of power, and the return journey felt shorter.

The village rejoiced at his return. The elder proclaimed, “Villagers, our beloved son has brought back the sacred iron. With it, no beast can harm us. Let us build a large fire to forge the sword.”

Day and night, the villagers worked tirelessly to forge the sword. Their hearts were filled with hope that the monstrous bird would soon be vanquished. When the sword was completed, the elder, after invoking the river and mountain spirits to protect the young man, solemnly handed it to him. The sword radiated a dazzling light, and the young man felt a burning determination to destroy the enemy.

The villagers offered their last grains of rice, shaping them into a large ball for the young man to carry on his journey.

After many days of travel, guided by the fallen trees, the young man reached the bird’s lair—a treacherous mountainous region. The bird, asleep in a deep cave, breathed heavily, causing the ground to tremble.

Filled with anger, the young man charged towards the cave, shouting loudly. The noise awakened the bird, which, sensing human presence, lunged out. Seeing only a small figure, the bird attacked, its massive beak aimed at the young man. With agility, the young man dodged, and his sword struck, severing one of the bird’s beaks.

Enraged, the bird flapped its wings, creating a gust that sent the young man tumbling. Undeterred, he rose again, his determination unwavering. With each strike, the sword chipped away at the bird’s defenses, until finally, the monstrous creature fell, defeated.

The young man returned to the village, where celebrations erupted. The villagers hailed him as their hero, and peace was restored to their land. The elder’s words had come true—the young man had become the village’s protector, a symbol of courage and wisdom for generations to come.
