With Tet coming to an end, many turn to cam canh, a sweet and juicy fruit, as an offering to their ancestors during the Khai Ha ceremony. However, it’s important to be mindful when purchasing this fruit to ensure you get the best quality.
Here are some tips to keep in mind when buying cam canh:
Firstly, avoid buying branches with wilted leaves
When choosing cam canh for consumption, it’s common to opt for fruit without branches or leaves. However, when it comes to offerings or altar decorations, a cam canh with a fresh branch and leaves is ideal. The freshness of the fruit can be gauged by the state of its branch and leaves—if they’re vibrant and healthy, the fruit is likely to be fresh too.
Secondly, steer clear of overly soft or hard cam canh
Delicious, sweet cam canh will have a full shape and a slightly firm yet yielding texture when gently pressed. Soft fruit may indicate bruising or flesh that has stuck to the rind, resulting in a less sweet and undesirable taste. On the other hand, overly hard cam canh often have thick rinds and insipid flesh, so they’re best avoided.
Thirdly, beware of overly large fruit with smooth surfaces
While a larger cam canh may seem like a better deal, these fruits often have hollow centers and less sweet flesh. They are generally of lower quality. When purchasing, also inspect the surface for black spots and ensure it feels smooth and firm to the touch.
