1 Short Poems to Wish Yourself a Happy Birthday
1. By Nguyên Hữu
I light a pink candle for myself,
The joyful flame dancing in the air.
Today, someone else is celebrating their birthday, too,
So raise your glass and join me for a minute of bliss…
It’s my birthday? My shadow stirs,
Growing longer as I embrace life’s highs and lows.
Who knows what tomorrow will bring?
Lost in the world, I wander silently in the courtyard…
Happy birthday to me, oh people, hear my call!
Come, join me in a drink, no need for gifts.
A sincere wish and a heart full of cheer,
Together, let’s paint a poem with fragrant flowers…
2. By Võ Thị Quỳnh
There’s a man turning thirty,
Vibrant and youthful, his life full of vigor.
I write poetry, it’s my habit, my ritual,
And though it’s December, these words aren’t for you.
I light a candle, illuminating the night’s play,
And I won’t blow it out, for I have no more wishes.
My girlhood days have long passed in a whirlwind,
Can the chariot of time ever reverse its course?
I’ll write myself a few lines, a humble poem,
Amidst the void, a mix of sadness and joy.
I no longer question my heart,
Do I still love, or do I still hate?
On the table, the candle flickers, casting dancing shadows,
And love, it sleeps, not yet awakened.
I no longer scream as I did a decade ago,
For my pain slowly fades as death approaches.
I’ll keep your birthday wish close to my heart,
(For some things have lost their meaning.)
As the candle burns out, I close my poem,

3. By Hoàng Lê Dũng Sĩ
03-03, the day I was born, the sky devoid of the moon’s light, leaving only the wind to keep me company.
I cried out, a mother’s pain as she brings new life into the world,
A gentle breath, a fragile life.
I cried my first cry,
Though who we were didn’t matter, for our memories were forever imprinted in our subconscious.
Despite the weight on my heart, I forge ahead towards the future.
On this day, the fields are vibrant with green, dancing in the wind,
A reminder of happiness long gone.
I lie down, my body taut, my breath strange and foreign.
In the spring, under a thin crescent moon, I feel lonely and sad,
Haunted by memories of past promises, now as fleeting as bubbles.
The path into this life is full of lingering attachments.
4. By Cung Trầm Tưởng
Rain falls on a cold night in Saigon,
Is the sky crying because it’s my birthday?
Perhaps it’s just the rain, and the sky is the same as always.
Today, the sea is cold, and the rain soaks the barren land.
My soul, confined to this land, bears a heavy burden,
And my body, once vibrant, now fades with the spring.
With empty hands, I hold on to my faith,
As the sun sets on the idols of my past.
Tonight, the sky weeps, and the rain falls,
The wind howls, signaling the arrival of autumn.
Is the sky crying, too, in silent sorrow?
I wrap my coat tightly around me and head home, my heart heavy.

5. By Calong Nguyen
On my birthday, I’m alone, a solitary figure,
With only a glass of strong liquor and a cloud of cigarette smoke for company.
What’s there to celebrate when my heart is filled with sorrow?
How can I wish for anything when my eyes are brimming with tears?
I’ve tried so many times to forget,
But my birthday always brings the most pain.
The day when candle flames flicker and die, taking my memories with them,
When I pluck flowers in the afternoon, a sad ritual.
On my birthday, I wander down an empty path,
The full moon’s light casting a lonely shadow.
I stroll aimlessly, my soul drifting in the mist at the end of the lane,
My birthday, a sad celebration, illuminated by a flickering candle.
I remember you, and the memories we shared,
The silent rain falls, and the quiet moon weeps.
Are they crying for my life, or are those tears for the stars?
I wish myself a happy birthday, filled with laughter.
I wish to spend it with my family,
Their quiet giggles filling the air.
Especially with her, holding hands as we stroll through bustling streets,
And I wish to leave my sorrows behind, embracing life with newfound faith.
I wish for my heart to always be filled with joy,
At all times, on all days.
I wish for a love so beautiful it feels like a dream,
Coloring my life with the richness of poetry.
Happy Birthday to Me
6. Source: Collected
Suddenly, I realize I’m over forty,
Time has dusted over my smiling lips.
How many seasons have passed, how many storms have I weathered,
Floating and sinking with the tides of life…
Life may not be as beautiful as poetry,
But I still cherish my dreams.
I pour myself a drink and make a toast:
May the path ahead be clearer, the fog lifted.
May my boat, lost in the distant sky, find its way,
And may the old dock, bathed in moonlight, come alive again.
I pick up a few poetic lines to accompany my drink,
And I toast to myself, a solitary celebration.
I take a step forward, embracing life,
For every river has its high and low tides.
And today, on my birthday, I can’t help but utter these words,
A mix of wonder and contemplation.

7. By Thu Nguyệt
I light a candle and place a flower by my side,
Celebrating my birthday with a mix of joy and sorrow.
I listen intently to my own breath,
And suddenly, I laugh, hearing the vast emptiness within.
Here’s a red candle, and here’s a rose,
The flower will wither, and the candle will go out.
My diligent heart will one day stop beating,
And the calendar pages will become meaningless trash.
The days of the present, the days of the past, and the days yet to come,
All part of the endless cycle of life.
Everything is so natural, so effortless,
Life goes on, with or without me.
It doesn’t matter, not one bit!
8. By Trần Minh Hiền
I light a candle from my heart to celebrate my birthday,
Forty-six years ago, my mother brought me into this world.
She endured the pain of childbirth,
Giving me life and a voice to cry with.
Diligent and caring, she raised me,
Praying and sacrificing for my well-being every day.
Faced with storms and hardships, she remained strong, enduring the pain.
She gave me light and guided me towards a bright future.
I embrace the memory, feeling like a soldier,
Fighting alongside my friends, unafraid of death.
I hold my head high under the summer sun,
Grateful to my mother for her lifelong dedication.
On my birthday, which falls on Christmas, I ignite my soul,
Illuminating the cold winter night, a glimmer of hope.
I light the fire of selflessness, a quiet, enduring love.

A red rose, a vibrant splash of color,
Celebrating my new age and welcoming new dreams.
I take a step forward, embracing the future,
And I wish for eternal youth and beauty.
I wish to be surrounded by adoring girls,
For love to take flight and reach new heights.
May I find happiness in a warm embrace,
And may paradise be a place of comfort and joy.
I wish to stay young and vibrant every day,
And to soon walk hand in hand with my beloved.
I wish for a passionate kiss and everlasting happiness,
At all times, on all days, and in every moment.
I wish for a love so beautiful it feels like a dream,
Filling my life with poetic bliss.
Happy Birthday to Me!
10. By Phùng Mạnh Tiếp
It’s strange, it’s my birthday,
Yet I can’t seem to write a single line of poetry.
Last night, in my dreams,
I soared above, embracing both heaven and earth.
But in a moment of hesitation,
I left behind earthly pleasures, no longer tempted.
So, on my birthday, I carry with me,
The memories of those poetic muses.

11. By Đào Văn Cứu
I write this poem for myself,
For March 27 has arrived, my birthday.
On this special day, I reflect on the past,
Fifty years ago, when I first entered this world.
As I write, tears stream down my face,
Grateful for my parents, who brought me into this life and cared for me.
Their love is like a mountain, their kindness like an endless sky.
I write this poem with a smile,
Thankful for my beloved wife.
For over twenty years, we’ve shared life’s burdens and joys,
Enduring pain and celebrating happiness side by side.
I write this poem with a joyful heart,
Grateful for all the people I’ve met along the way.
You’ve helped me, supported me, and brightened my journey.
Our friendship shines brightly, even through life’s storms.
I write this poem for myself,
Through rain and shine, through life’s ups and downs.
At times, I’ve disappointed my friends,
But our brotherhood remains strong and vibrant.
