Washing your pillow’s stuffing a few times a year not only makes it softer and fluffier but also prolongs its lifespan. Join Mr. Patric Richardson, the laundry guru, as he guides you through the process of washing your pillows amidst the spring-cleaning frenzy.
Which Pillows Can Be Washed?
Read the care label. Except for memory foam, buckwheat, or “dry clean only” pillows, most pillows, including down and polyester ones, can be machine-washed. As a rule of thumb, if a pillow cannot be machine-washed, it should not be put in the dryer either.
Remove the Pillowcase and Cover
Set them aside to be washed separately. Opt for a gentle cycle when washing the pillow stuffing. Front-loading washing machines are preferable, as the agitator in top-loading machines can damage the pillows. If your machine is large enough, wash two pillows at once to balance the load.
When washing pillows, it’s best to use natural laundry detergent, as it will be easier to rinse out. If you must use laundry powder, use a moderate amount and run the cycle again to ensure all the detergent is removed. Avoid using fabric softener when washing any type of pillow.
Thoroughly Air-dry/Tumble-dry
If you don’t have a dryer, ensure the pillow stuffing is completely air-dried. If you’re using a dryer, toss in a few dryer balls to prevent the filling from clumping. It may take two or three cycles for the pillows to be entirely dry. This step is the most time-consuming but also the most crucial, as dampness can lead to mold, which is harmful to your health.
Pillow Washing Frequency
According to Richardson, how often you should wash your pillows depends on your usage. Since we use them daily, it’s recommended to wash them once every season.
The easiest way to extend the life of your pillows is to invest in good pillowcases. A soft, sturdy case with a zipper will protect your pillows. This way, you only need to frequently wash the cases.
Richardson also shares a clever tip to make your pillows feel fresh and clean: spritz them with a bit of essential oil or vodka. Vodka is excellent at eliminating odors without leaving a residual smell.
