The mild acid components, containing about 7%-8% citrus acid in lemon or lemon extract, are effective against some types of bacteria and viruses. If you don’t have lemons, vinegar can also be used for cleaning and disinfection.
Studies have shown that natural components such as lemons, limes, and vinegar can be used as non-toxic disinfectants. In one study, researchers reported that vinegar is as effective as conventional commercial disinfectants in eliminating bacteria.
A separate study also revealed that vinegar can be used to fight against flu viruses.
Meanwhile, findings from a third study showed that vinegar can kill Mycobacterium tuberculosis, a very difficult-to-kill bacteria that causes tuberculosis. The researchers conducting the study affirmed that if vinegar can eliminate M. tuberculosis, it can also help eliminate other types of bacteria.
