Internet users put cold towels on fans to cool down, expert reveals deadly mistake

To combat the oppressive heat, many British people have come up with tricks to stay cool using electric fans, but not all of these tricks are effective.

The United Kingdom is currently experiencing scorching hot days, leading many people to resort to using electric fans for cooling. Recently, a girl named Leah White shared a method of using a fan to extract hot air from the room and bring in cool air from the outside. Specifically, she would place the fan in front of a window and open the window, allowing the fan to draw out the hot air from the room and push it outside. At night, when the temperature has cooled down, she would reverse the fan, filling the room with cool air.

In addition to this method, many people, including influential individuals on social media, also use a trick of placing a cold towel on the fan to blow out cold air. They would place a towel under cold water, freeze it, and then place the frozen towel on the fan. The “product” looks like a DIY air conditioner, but experts have issued warnings about the potential dangers of this homemade cooling method.

Giuseppe Capanna, a product safety engineer at Electrical Safety First, warns: “Once again, we are witnessing influential figures using potentially dangerous cooling methods. Placing a frozen towel on a plugged-in fan can destabilize the device and cause it to tip over, with the fan blades colliding and completely damaging the equipment.”

Capanna describes further: “The greatest risk comes from the towel, as it can melt and introduce water into the motor, plug, and socket, increasing the risk of electric shock.”

This is not the only cooling method that has received warnings from experts. Last week, a British psychologist warned against sleeping naked because sweat would be left on the skin instead of being absorbed by the fibers of clothing. As a result, you will feel hotter and more humid.

The UK is currently facing intense heat waves. The British summer is usually considered mild, but recently the temperature has risen above 30 degrees Celsius. The heat even caused some royal guards to faint during a rehearsal for the birthday parade of Prince Charles in London.

Meteorologists say there is a 5% chance of cooler weather this summer, and a 45% chance of continued heat, which is two to three times higher than normal. Although it is not yet known whether the temperature will rise to 40 degrees Celsius like last year, meteorologists still warn people to be prepared for this possibility.

What should be noted when using a safe fan?

In addition to issuing warnings, Giuseppe Capanna also provides some advice on using a safe fan:

1. Buy fans from reputable retailers: Buying an electric fan from retailers you have never heard of may lead to purchasing low-quality counterfeit products, posing risks of electric shock and fire.

2. Keep the fan in a stable position: Always place your fan on a flat and stable surface. Do not place the fan on the edge of a surface (like a table) or place objects next to the fan (like an ice pack). When knocked over, the fan blades may collide with the fan housing and permanently damage the fan.

3. Place the fan in a well-ventilated environment: Electric fans are more efficient when placed in a well-ventilated environment with few obstacles.

3. Clean accumulated dust on your fan: Removing dust from the fan housing and fan blades helps the motor operate more efficiently and extends the fan’s lifespan.

4. Pay attention to unusual sounds: If your fan suddenly makes a buzzing sound, there may be an issue with the motor. When you notice any abnormal smells or noises, turn off the fan, unplug it, and check it.
