One of the common issues that families often encounter and have to deal with is a clogged toilet. Recently, a video shared on social media has gained a lot of attention from users. In the video, this family is unclogging their toilet. However, it’s worth noting that the method they use is unclogging the toilet with only 5,000 VND (Vietnamese Dong).

Specifically, this family uses a large adhesive tape, sealing the toilet bowl completely, leaving no gaps. Then, press the flush button once or twice to inflate the large adhesive tape layer. After that, the person pressing it firmly on the surface of the adhesive tape a few times. With the pressure from above and the additional pressure of water to the clogged area, the toilet bowl will be unclogged quickly.

In fact, this method is not unfamiliar. Many families have tried and shared that with cheap adhesive tape rolls, their toilets have been easily unclogged without the need for specialized tools.

Causes of toilet clogs

As mentioned above, a clogged toilet is a common issue in households and almost every family has encountered this problem at least once. There are several different reasons leading to this situation. Here are some common causes as stated by experts or companies specializing in providing solutions.

First and foremost, users have put too much toilet paper in the toilet bowl. Although the drain pipes are relatively large enough to flush waste and toilet paper during usage, when a large amount of toilet paper is flushed at once or for a long time, it will overload the pipes.

In addition, the quality of toilet paper is also very important. Some types of toilet paper do not guarantee quality, are difficult to dissolve in water, and they will clump together in the drainage pipes, especially in curved areas. Over time, the paper and waste will accumulate and block the toilet bowl.

Secondly, foreign objects may be in the drain pipes. This can happen when, during usage, users accidentally drop something into the toilet bowl that cannot easily flow through the pipes. It is better to discover and remove such objects as soon as possible, otherwise the clogged toilet situation will become even worse.

Thirdly, the septic tank is full. The septic tank, also known as a cesspool or septic pit, is the place where the daily organic waste of households is stored. Here, the waste will be decomposed by bacteria, turning into sludge, and then drained through the pipes into the environment. Therefore, when the septic tank is full, it means that there is no more space to receive more waste.

A toilet bowl without a ventilation pipe can also cause clogging. This belongs to a technical error during the construction of the toilet, so it is rare and less common.

Methods to unclog a toilet at home

In addition to the method of using adhesive tape to cover the entire surface of the toilet bowl as demonstrated by the user above, there are many other methods that families can perform at home to “save” their clogged toilets.

1. Use hot water

The simplest way to deal with a clogged toilet is to use hot water. According to experts, hot water can soften dirt and effectively unclog the toilet.

At this point, you just need to pour a large amount of hot water, pour it forcefully into the toilet bowl. This method will immediately bring results. However, it only works with less severe clogs.

2. Use baking soda and vinegar

Vinegar and baking soda are both easy-to-find and environmentally safe ingredients for users. When these two ingredients are combined, an effective drainage mixture will be created.

The steps are as follows:

– Mix baking soda and vinegar in a 1:1 ratio to create a foaming solution.

– Pour the mixture directly into the toilet bowl and close the lid, wait for about 2-3 hours.

– Flush the toilet with water.

Baking soda and vinegar combined will dissolve waste, making it easy to flow with water when you flush the toilet.

3. Use powders, liquids, or specialized drain tools

Powders, liquids, or specialized tools are the last resort when manual methods cannot improve the situation.

There are many different types on the market, suitable for each case. If your toilet is clogged with food waste or waste, you can easily use powders or liquids. The method is simple, just pour the powder or liquid into the toilet bowl, soak for a few hours, preferably overnight, and then flush with water. For more severe clogs caused by foreign objects, it is advisable to use professional drain tools or seek the assistance of specialized companies.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, it is effective in some cases. The method involves folding a 5,000 VND note and using it to push and break up the clog, and then flushing. This is a quick fix and an affordable alternative to a plunger.

The 5,000 VND note is thin and flexible, allowing it to easily reach and break up the clog. It acts as a makeshift ‘snake’, dislodging the blockage and allowing water to flow freely again.

While it is a cheap and accessible solution, there are potential risks. The note could get stuck or disintegrate in the pipes, causing further blockages. It is also not a long-term solution for severe clogs or recurring blockages, and may not work for solid obstructions.

Using a plunger is a more effective and traditional method. For severe blockages, a drain snake or auger can be used to break up the clog. Preventative measures include regular maintenance and avoiding flushing inappropriate items.

Regularly cleaning the toilet and pipes can help prevent clogs. Using enzymes or natural cleaners can break down waste and maintain the toilet’s functionality. It is also important to be mindful of what is flushed, avoiding items like wipes, paper towels, and feminine products.
