Washing machines have become indispensable appliances in modern households, saving time and effort in the daily chore of laundry. With their spin-drying function, some even with ultra-drying options, users can further save time on drying clothes.
However, the following user story reflects a contrasting experience. The user, L.H.Mai, resides in an apartment complex on Minh Khai Street, Vinh Tuy Ward, Hai Ba Trung District, Hanoi. They recounted: “After the washing machine indicated it had finished the cycle, I opened it to hang the clothes but was surprised to find every piece drenched despite the machine reporting completion. Left with no choice, I had to take all the clothes out of the machine, wring them manually in a large basin, and then hang them to dry.”

Of course, manual wringing cannot match the efficiency of machine spinning. Coupled with Hanoi’s recent lack of sunshine, it took 1-2 days for the clothes to dry completely. This was significantly longer than the usual time when the clothes were spin-dried, adding to the extra effort required for manual wringing.
So, what causes a washing machine to fail in spin-drying clothes?
Causes and Solutions for Washing Machines Failing to Spin Dry Clothes
According to experts specializing in home appliances and washing machines, several factors can cause a washing machine’s spin-drying function to malfunction or fail. Some originate from the appliance itself, while others result from user error.
The first possible cause is that the user forgot to select a wash-spin cycle, opting instead for a wash-only cycle when using the washing machine. In this cycle, the appliance will only wash and rinse, draining water and detergent from the drum. The clothes will be returned clean but not spin-dried. Consequently, a certain amount of water remains in the clothes.

To rectify the situation, the user needs to leave the clothes in the machine and manually select the spin mode. This will resolve the issue of water retention in the clothes.
The second potential cause could be a faulty washing machine circuit board, which can cause various malfunctions in the appliance’s programs. If this occurs, users should not attempt to repair or continue using the machine. Instead, they should immediately contact professional repair centers or technicians. Timely inspection of the washing machine can prevent more severe damage.
The inability of a washing machine to spin-dry clothes can also be attributed to issues with the appliance’s water drainage system. Specifically, the filter and drain hose may be clogged, or the drain pump may have malfunctioned. As a result, the water spun out of the clothes cannot escape the drum, leaving the clothes damp and not fully spin-dried.
Therefore, the washing machine’s drainage components require regular inspection and cleaning. This will ensure they remain in good condition, operating effectively and preventing problems.
Clogged or faulty drainage components in the washing machine, preventing water from draining out, are also responsible for the appliance’s inability to spin-dry clothes effectively (Illustrative photo)
These are the three most common reasons why a washing machine may fail to spin-dry clothes. Additionally, experts have identified two less frequent causes: the washing machine being placed on uneven ground; and an unsuitable amount of clothes in the machine – either too little or too much.
For these two causes, users only need to check the washing machine’s placement; if it is tilted, they should adjust it or use sturdy leg supports; or they should adjust the amount of clothes in the machine. If it is overloaded, remove some clothes and restart the spin cycle. Conversely, if there are too few clothes, redistribute them evenly in the drum or add 1-2 towels.
