We spend about one-third of our lives sleeping on the bed. Therefore, everyone should invest in a good bedsheet set to have a good night’s sleep.
Some types of bedsheets provide warmth in winter and coolness in summer. Many other types are made from breathable fabrics like linen, which can improve the quality of your sleep.
The pros and cons of various bedsheet materials are analyzed by Homes and Gardens below to help you make an informed decision.

Cotton sateen
Bedsheets made from cotton sateen fabric create a luxurious and soft feel.
This fabric is woven with one thread over and three threads under, instead of the traditional one thread over and one thread under weaving. Therefore, bedsheets made from cotton sateen will feel warm in winter and cool in summer.
According to Aja Tilghman, the Product Director at Lulu & Georgia (US furniture brand), cotton sateen blends have better insulation properties, helping you feel warm on cold nights.
Although soft and smooth, this material is not as durable as other types of bedsheets.

Satin
Satin has a similar look and feel to sateen, but is usually made from longer fibers.
Satin fabric is suitable for people with sensitive skin and allergies, although it is difficult to clean and more expensive than most other bedsheets.
Good quality satin fabrics usually have a thread count of about 400 TC (total threads per square inch).

Microfiber
Microfiber fabric is very soft, wrinkle-resistant, and usually cheaper than traditional cotton. However, it wears out faster and is prone to pilling.
Microfiber fabric provides a cozy, soft, and non-allergenic feel, without wrinkling.
However, this type of bedsheets is not the top choice if you are looking for a luxurious and beautiful option.

Cotton percale
Cotton percale fabric has the advantage of being lightweight and durable, created using the traditional crisscross weave consisting of one thread over and one thread under.
Bedsheets made from cotton percale are widely used in many hotels.
According to Bed, Bath & Beyond (an American home goods retailer), this material provides a crisp, cool feel but is not as soft and cozy as other types.

Jersey
Jersey fabric is made from 100% cotton or a blend of cotton and polyester.
It is a soft, stretchable, breathable fabric with good temperature regulation properties.
Bedsheets made from jersey fabric can resist wrinkles, be affordable, but not overly shiny and luxurious. Therefore, you can use this type of bedsheets for children’s bedrooms.

Thin flannel
Bedsheets made from thin flannel fabric are very cozy and are often used in winter.
However, these bedsheets should be limited in areas with year-round heat.
Thin flannel fabric requires hand washing, making it difficult to use in washing machines and dryers.
Bedsheets made from bamboo fabric are more expensive but durable and eco-friendly. Illustration: Kitesgrove. |
Bamboo
Bedsheets made from bamboo fabric are made from fibers of bamboo plants. This material is soft, luxurious, breathable, and even has temperature-regulating properties.
In addition, due to its moisture-wicking and cooling properties, bamboo is ideal for those who sweat a lot or feel hot at night. Furthermore, bamboo bedsheets are hypoallergenic and can resist bacteria, making them suitable for people with sensitive skin, asthma, or allergies.
The moisture-wicking properties of bamboo also help repel dust mites on the bedsheet, which are common allergens causing symptoms such as stuffy nose and sneezing.
Handcrafted from natural fibers, bamboo fabric is super durable and less prone to pilling or tearing. This type of bedsheets does not absorb moisture like cotton, so it is more durable and less prone to fading.
However, bamboo bedsheets are usually expensive, and users should take care when washing them.
Linen fabric has good moisture-wicking properties and becomes softer over time. Illustration: James Merrell. |
Linen
Linen fabric is very durable and has moisture-wicking properties. Linen can absorb up to 20 times its weight in moisture, so you can enjoy a dry, clean, and undisturbed night’s sleep.
100% linen bedsheets are often recommended for those prone to acne. Natural linen fibers are hypoallergenic and resistant to dust, fungi, and microorganisms.
After each wash, linen fabric becomes softer, smoother, and even more luxurious. This is due to the good moisture absorption ability of the material. In addition, linen bedsheets are environmentally friendly and have high durability.
