Eggs can be boiled, steamed, fried, scrambled…they’re delicious in any way. This type of food is rich in nutrients and suitable for the taste and needs of all ages.
Should you wash eggs before storing them?
Eggs have a longer shelf life than other foods. Therefore, many housewives have a habit of buying a lot of eggs to store in the refrigerator for gradual consumption. However, many people wonder if they should wash the eggs before storing them or if it’s better to store them directly in the refrigerator after bringing them home.
Should you wash eggs before storing them?
Many people believe that the outside of an egg has a protective layer of bloom that prevents bacteria from entering the inside, keeping the eggs fresh and preventing them from spoiling. Therefore, after buying eggs, they usually just put them in the refrigerator.
According to experts, this way of storing eggs is not necessarily the best; it can even spread bacteria on the outside of the eggshell to other foods.
In response to Tổ Quốc newspaper, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Duy Thinh, former lecturer at the Institute of Biotechnology and Food Technology, Hanoi University of Technology, said that it is true that eggs freshly laid by hens have a layer of bloom covering the outside. This layer is considered a protective wax barrier that prevents the invasion of foreign substances into the eggshell.
Many people think this way, so they store eggs by putting them in the refrigerator right after buying them. However, eggs bought at the market often have many contaminated ones, which can be even coated in feces, bran, etc. In addition, many people’s hands touching the eggs can also make the eggshells full of bacteria.
Should you wash eggs before storing them? It’s highly recommended because eggs bought at the market can be contaminated with feces, bran… and full of bacteria.
“The protective wax layer is able to protect the inside of the eggs but not enough to eliminate bacteria on the outside of the shell. We casually put the eggs we’ve just bought into the refrigerator and that can contaminate other foods. Inadvertently, this habit can spread more bacteria and viruses inside the refrigerator,” said Assoc. Prof. Nguyen Duy Thinh.
The principle of a clean refrigerator is that the nature of the refrigerator must be clean, and the food stored in it must also be clean. So, should you wash eggs before storing them in the refrigerator? The answer is yes, don’t put freshly bought eggs from the market directly into the refrigerator.
Note before putting eggs in the refrigerator
Experts advise housewives to clean the eggs before putting them in the refrigerator. If the eggs are bought at local markets, we should wash them quickly, preferably with salt water, or regular clean water, then dry them with a cloth and store them in the cold compartment. If you buy them at supermarkets, the eggs have already been cleaned, so there is no need to wash them.
Before storing in the refrigerator, eggs need to be cleaned to remove dirt.
When storing eggs, do not place them together with items that contain a lot of essential oils, such as ginger, onions, chili. The essential oils can penetrate the eggs through the air vents in the shell, causing the eggs to deteriorate, and over time, they will spoil.
The expert also added that when buying eggs, you need to carefully choose clean and fresh eggs. Do not buy eggs with the following signs:
– Cracks on the shell
– Too smooth eggshells
– Eggs with a gray color
– Swollen eggshells
– Eggs with a strange smell
– When shaking the egg, you can hear the sound of water moving inside.
In addition, you should not store eggs in the refrigerator for more than 30 days to ensure nutrition and avoid the risk of contamination.
