Here are some signs that you may have purchased substandard gasoline.
Difficult or impossible to start the engine
Vehicle engines require the right mix of fuel and air to ignite, generating power and enabling movement. If your engine is difficult to start or fails to start altogether, it could be a sign that your fuel filter is clogged due to dirty fuel entering the tank.
To get your engine running again, drivers will need to drain the fuel tank, clean the fuel injectors, refill with fresh fuel, adjust the carburetor, and replace the fuel filter properly.

However, it’s important to rule out other potential causes for a vehicle not starting, such as a dead battery or faulty spark plugs. Once these issues have been addressed, drivers should then inspect the fuel filter and ensure the fuel quality.
Engine stalls or loses power when accelerating
If your vehicle jerks or stalls while accelerating, it’s likely due to the engine’s fuel filter being unable to prevent foreign particles from reaching the fuel injectors in the combustion chamber. Alternatively, there could be water in the fuel, causing the engine to lose power and eventually stall.
As the combustion chamber attempts to ‘digest’ the dirty fuel, it cannot burn the impurities, which may include water. This abnormal combustion reduces the engine’s power and responsiveness, resulting in a jerky ride.
Sudden stalling while driving
For efficient and smooth operation, vehicle engines require an adequate supply of the correct type and standard of fuel. If the fuel is contaminated with impurities, water, or fails to meet standards, it will displace space in the combustion chamber and restrict airflow to the engine. This can lead to incomplete fuel combustion or even condensation, causing the engine to shut down unexpectedly and the vehicle to stall.
Gradual decline in engine performance
While a vehicle’s engine can still operate on dirty or low-quality fuel, it will do so at a reduced efficiency. This is because the ratio of standard fuel to impurities tips towards the latter as the good fuel is depleted, especially when the driver shifts through different gears.
In this scenario, engine performance will gradually decline as the supply of standard fuel diminishes.
