Home safety is paramount. Regardless of the size of your home, there could be a lot going on indoors that we ought to be cautious about and not overlook, such as house fires and strange odors. Fortunately, sometimes you can be alerted and can prevent that disaster before it happens. Just pay attention and don not ignore the following warning signs, especially these kinds of “scents,” and you can avoid unnecessary risks.
1. Gas Odor
Natural gas is odorless, but if there is a gas leak in your home, it will usually smell like rotten eggs. If you smell this odor indoors, you may be in danger due to the gas leak, which can cause very dangerous fires and explosions. When you smell gas in the room, get out of the house immediately. Then contact various rescue agencies for proper handling instructions.
2. Musty Odor
The musty, pungent smell could be due to a leaking sink or broken pipe causing mold, or there may be dark and damp places in the house where mold thrives. Mold not only damages belongings and reduces the durability of household appliances but also affects health, especially for those with allergies or asthma, as it can make their conditions worse.
If you spot mold, disinfect non-porous surfaces. If it’s a tiled floor, use a bleach solution with about 10% water, let it sit for 10 minutes, then scrub and ventilate by opening doors and windows. For porous surfaces, immediate replacement is necessary, as even with mold removal measures, it is challenging to eliminate them entirely since they have already penetrated the surface.
3. Bathroom Odor
If your house smells like a sewage treatment plant, the cause could be a gas leak in the drain pipe. This gas contains harmful and explosive components such as hydrogen sulfide. This can irritate the eyes, cause loss of consciousness, and deplete oxygen, leading to asphyxiation.
For infrequently used bathrooms, the smell may be coming from the shower drain. Additionally, the sink has a U-shaped part that holds a small amount of water to prevent sewer gas from flowing back into the house. If the bathroom is not used, the water in that area may evaporate and cause the odor.
A simple solution is to pour a cup of water into the bathroom drain. And to increase efficiency, add a teaspoon of vegetable oil so that the water does not evaporate. If the problem is not due to the sink drain pipe, it may be due to damaged or clogged vent pipes that carry air from the sewer upwards. In this case, call a plumber to inspect.
4. Cigarette Odor
We all know the harmful effects of cigarette smoke on health, and we always want to stay away from smoking areas. But it’s harder with secondhand smoke, such as in a hotel room or rented accommodation where smokers have stayed before.
With this old smoke, the particles associated with combustion will settle on surfaces such as tables, desks, and bedding. The carcinogens mix with dust, which is especially dangerous for children. When children lie down and roll on the carpet and put their hands in their mouths, they inadvertently ingest harmful substances. Therefore, thoroughly clean places where people have smoked before.
5. Smoke Odor
A strong smoke odor can cause panic, but even a faint, occasional smell can indicate a significant problem. If you smell smoke in your home, it could be coming from electrical appliances and could be dangerous. Therefore, when detected, you should call an electrician to check immediately.
